Common euro w: Just spent the last three hours walking around Nouméa (pop 95k) and didn't see a single beg button

Nicely walkable, but the transit is terrible – the comprehensive network around the agglomération was scrapped during the 2024 riots, and has since only partially come back

My most gadgetbahn-adjacent take remains that I actually like APS? (There isn't really a good reason to use it here though)

The fjords may not be as extensive here as they are in the Sydney area, but Canberra might still just be my favorite place in Australia? I'm heading to Sydney now, but before I'll rejoin @jonasgaiswinkler.eu there I'll make a stopover elsewhere ✨

And now, my first time on a NSW Xplorer <3

I'm such a sucker for great tree canopies, and this genuinely feels like the average street in Canberra <3

Also they seem to be taking great care of the ducks here

Genuinely love the messaging that implicitly ties new housing to further improved public amenities for everyone

Finally getting on a Canberra tram <3

Canberra UFO-style bus stop shelter appreciation post

(There are so many of those! All of them are hereby appreciated ☺️)

Australia simply loves to "protect" active mobility

- Extremely long waits for pedestrians at traffic lights

- Bike helmet laws decreasing life expectancy by effecting hardly anyone cycles and making bikeshare impossible

- Further ""bike safety"" legislation (helmet fines start at 230€ in NSW)

- The next phase isn't ped green but always green for *cross traffic*
- Next is ped green but for the crossing w the button press only
- Ped green lasts for <5 sec, immediately upon flashing ped red traffic in the same direction gets green

The idea seems to be to protect peds from turning traffic,
November 24, 2025 at 6:13 PM
Traffic lights here (meaning Australia in general) are genuinely the worst from a pedestrian POV

- No automatic ped green with through traffic even on this shopping street w wide sidewalks etc
- Beg buttons all the way, which take forever to effectuate a signal change, even at 04:30 in the morning

Adelaide Metro <3

Now that's a proper chicane (and this street has lots of those)

Narrowing the street and allowing parking on one alternating side of the street only would be more effective, but still

(Love it here so much but) peak-only bike lanes 😭

What are they doing with those lane – barely a meter wide – outside of peak hours?
November 21, 2025 at 9:45 PM
Now for something completely different
November 21, 2025 at 9:31 PM
The difference is 29 vs 36 min, I'm guessing marketing people like "get there in under half an hour"

I'd probably rather skip the stop altogether than have every single train stop there
