Looks like we made a deal on the SF comic book with a Hungarian publisher, although we're still working out the details. We'll be contacting French publishers as well.

THE WAILING (2016) - Killings with a supernatural twist. A beautifully directed film, richness for each senses in every scene. Slow burn, which is fine, the runtime is a bit harder to accept. Love the tropes & the execution.

THE DESCENT (2005) - Finally something with tangible horror, I like what it does. Sometimes it's too loud where quiet would have been more effective. Still, it's very good. Tense, well paced, refreshing after haunted houses & random scares.

The fuck is going on with TV broadcast

THE SECT (1991) - Also known as The Devil's Daughter. This is my favorite so far, proper weird fiction, fantastic imagery, although, yet again, I had no idea what was going on. Chants, birds, bugs, rabbits, visions, insanity. My first Soavi, if you can believe it.

THE BEYOND (1981) - Now we're talking! Proper meatgrinder with garish but well-executed gore effects, artsy maximalism, Lovecraftian themes without any Lovecraftian atmosphere. Great sound design, though. Also: random shit happens. Eyeballs and spiders and acid, just... maximum Fulci.

THE EVIL (1978) - Another haunted house story, but now it's modern (colors and such). You guessed it: random bad things happen, not very interesting, although the ending offers a weird glimpse behind the curtain. Not bad, not great either. It's like a less funny version of The Money Pit.

THE HAUNTING (1963) - I think this is the third adaptation of Hill House I've seen, this is without a doubt the best, but it still undersells the book.

THE UNDEAD (1957) - Roger Corman with a pulpy story about a prostitute who travels back in time to the middle ages via hypnosis, and this is the least crazy part. It's quite something.

THE CREEPER (1948) - Oh wow, this was stupid, just plain ridiculous. Weird cat stuff. Not going to elaborate.
October 23, 2025 at 7:52 PM
THE GHOUL (1933) - Boris Karloff! Also, finally sound! Anubis, and all kinds of pseudo-Egyptian nonsense. Pretty boring as a horror, but thankfully the film has someting else: comedy! Even the dialogue is entertaining. British, so.

THE MAGICIAN (1926) - Rex Ingram's occult film adapts W. Somerset Maugham's novel. This film was lost too for a while, but it has been recovered. Incredible images and atmosphere, some funny and tender scenes, really stands out from the era.

THE ANCESTRESS (Die Ahnfrau, 1919) - This was recovered from Brazil as I understand. Fairly standard Gothic story, think Walpole, Radcliffe. The text is in German (not a problem for me, just a warning), although not very exciting story. Static, awkwardly paced, stage-like.

Halloween marathon: a horror film from each decade!

THE MONSTER (1903) - Méliès makes a skeleton dance in front of a Sphynx. Couple of minutes of fun, but impressive in a way. Neat tricks.
