It’s been a very light persistent snow, like the fine rain mist of Pittsburgh but fluffier. It’s a feasting holiday but also a nature holiday, as I look out into the world and see it preparing for a long winter.

It’s snowing in Pittsburgh and I looked up to see a lone crow winging across a grey sky carrying something in its mouth to take back to the nest for winter. That’s what the season is about, today officially begins it. As difficult a holiday as it is to celebrate for a multitude of reasons.

Holidays have always been weird for me without my family but it’s worse this year even though (or maybe because) Tanis is here and all I can think about is all of our family who are missing. I don’t know how to pass on traditions that I never really thought about when I was making them.
