The Factory Of Maladies: Seven Days On A San Francisco Psych Ward by Debbie Hartung is a raw, visceral, unforgettable journey, written with a compassionate tone and dark humor. It explores the stigma of mental illness and the danger of cults.
That is a great haul and will keep you busy for a while!!

The conditions, treatment and care given was exactly the same-ie inadequate, uncaring and without compassion. Treated like a criminal with shame and guilt at their most vulnerable.

Changes NEED to be made or else this will remain and the suffering will continue.

Apologies for the long post!

Cue to today....he is currently in jail in Indonesia for killing his father in law after another schizophrenic episode. Restrained and without medication.

Debbie, the author of the book, was put in the exact same psych ward as him (about 12 years after).

I visited him and was heartbroken, not just to see him suffering, but with the state of the run down facility and lack of care and compassion. He was released without any follow up action from the medical "experts".
Even after a couple more scary episodes, he was never given the help he needed.

This photo is of a family friend, who was in my daughters class in elementary school. A fun, loving, generous, respectful, sweet boy.
Around the age of 20,he started to show signs of schizophrenia and was placed in a San Francisco Psych Ward.
