My mom gave me the mini cider press I've been coveting for several years, and I had a few apples from my tree frozen downstairs.

This cider is INCREDIBLY sweet, and about as local as possible. I am now looking forward to next fall with a mad scientist cackle that should probably worry my family.
The outside of a stainless steel cider press begins dribbling the dark amber fluid of autumn (aka cider) for the best sort of concoction. Pale brown-tan liquid that is completely opaque, contained within a mason jar. It is fresh squeezed apple cider.

Many broken jade plant stems on a coffee table, before they have been repotted but after they broke off the main plant when it decided to experiment with gravity. I have no idea why it tipped, either - nothing was touching it. So clearly it wanted an adventure.

Why do cats like investigating tea mugs? Even the stuffed ones!
A small cheetah cub stuffed animal is hugging (and trying to climb into?) a LARGE mug of tea that is bigger than the stuffie. The mug is full of tea, so this is not a good idea.

What you do not see is called garlic. It is odorous, tasty, and one of the healthier vegetables known to man.

(I've only been trying to get this in the ground since EARLY OCTOBER I would like a little break please? Today's "fun": my garage roof is rotting. 😬 Thank goodness for gardening.)
A wooden raised garden bed, 48 inches long, 24 inches wide, 12 inches deep. The soil inside is completely covered by mostly dry pine needles, and the ground around the bed is covered in mulch. A tape measure and dibble rest on the ground in front of the bed. You cannot see the garlic. It has learned how not to be seen, and it will not be exploded by Monty Python until I hopefully get scapes sometime in May.

Three days' work. One complete jelly roll. Doubled batting. Six bobbin winds. 50 feet of binding. Innumerable pins. Ten placemats.

And my thread neither jammed nor broke this entire project, so thank you to whoever it was that told me that thread gets old and I should chuck my grandmother's stash.
Ten placemats, stacked in groups of two because I made them two at a time so the central strips match. They are shades of purple, fuschia, light and dark green, orange, gold, and burgundy. The quilting has been done in red thread as a central square on the diagonal, with a border to border X crossing the center. The bindings are piecework of the scraps leftover from the main body of the mats, and as such no two are the same. And if somebody spills at Thanksgiving, I will have two spares and can throw the soiled one in the wash immediately. Raaaar.

So I lost at bobbin chicken several times today, but holy crap did I win at fabric chicken. I was SURE I was going to have to bind the last two placemats with some of the fabric I'm going to buy to make napkins, but no.

I win. This is all that was left of my jelly roll. I'm stunned.

One, one placemat!

Dear goodness, I'd forgotten just how much I loathe doing the bindings on quilts. And I have something like 50 feet to do. Ugh.

Still, this is actually fun, and I'm finally going to have enough matching placemats that I won't be doing the twitchy thing at Thanksgiving.

It is 61°F and sunny today, and the local bike path is attempting to convince me that it's not November and about to be awful weather.

I don't believe it for a minute, I've seen the forecast. But it's gorgeous for now, and I will appreciate it

I hauled my sewing machine, iron, cutting boards and mats, work table, box of fabric, bolt of batting, notions and scissors, crochet (for when my back gets cranky about sitting), and a laptop across town to work. It took six trips to get it upstairs to the workspace.

This is mildly ridiculous. 2/2

My day has involved the Novocaine wearing off midway through the fillings process, and two large containers of yogurt leaping to their doom on the driveway the minute I got home from the grocery store.

But I'm going to go make music with kind friends. I'll take every little win I can find or make.

Going to a potluck tonight, and it's very near Samhaine and el Dia de Los Muertos, so obviously I should bring Pan del Muerto.

My yeast was VERY EXCITED today. Even with a doubled recipe, this is a trifle excessive.
Pan del Muerto, fresh out of the oven. It has risen beautifully and the crossed bones on top stand out perfectly. It's also quite large, 16" long and 8" across.

Witchhazel is so much better than forsythia. I get gorgeous blossoms in spring that smell fabulous, and then in autumn I get this.
Vibrantly orange leaves contrast with a few green leaves that have not changed color yet. Vibrantly orange leaves with beautiful veins practically glowing in the autumn sunshine.

I attempted to throw four pots today, and I'm very much in the "screw it up so I learn things" stage. The first two just collapsed, because I got the clay too wet. The third came out ok, and the fourth sheered off the wheel when I made the base too shallow.

Hurrah, I had a learning experience!

A right hand in a leather work glove. The third finger of the glove has completely disintegrated along the finger pad, and the rest of the glove looks like it's not far behind. Clearly, it has served honorably and well and is due a quiet retirement.

My tomatoes, which didn't bloom for much of the summer because it was too hot, have decided that NOW is the perfect time to bloom.

We're getting a freeze tonight. 🤦
