We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this process, and recognise the challenging decisions Councillors must make.

The approved planning application reflects many of these priorities —including over 500 bike parking spaces, e-bike charging, non-standard cycle spaces, just four car parking spaces, widened footways, improved junction crossings, and safeguarded land for future cycling and bus improvements.

2/ There was a +ve conversation about how we make it safe for every schoolkid in Exeter to choose to walk or cycle to school.

They covered everything from the difference some 🚲 parking for a local shop can make; the quiet, calmed streets of St Thomas & safe routes to the new Matford Brook school

2/ When people pop up & say children can't have safe cycle routes to school cos they once saw someone cycling through a red light etc etc, should we respond or not?

Do we hope to build understanding one comment at a time or ignore those who probaly aren't in listen mode?

Another added walking the area now felt far safer: “I feel safer walking along the narrow footpaths & crossing Wonford Road.”
Another resident said “It’s great to see more children walking & riding. Ordinary people are being prioritised, & Wonford Road has come alive as part of my neighbourhood.”

Local residents living along the route praised the changes. A mother of2 said: “Before, this was a rat-run with speeding traffic & fumes. Now our house is cleaner & my children can walk & bike to school safely.”

“The Wonford Road filter shows what can be achieved when enforcement is taken seriously. With the E9 route helping Exeter’s air quality reach legal limits, we look forward to further improvements so safe & affordable journeys become the everyday norm for everyone.”
December 1, 2025 at 2:21 PM
James Diamond, chair of Exeter Cycling Campaign, welcomed the council’s commitment to enforcement, saying: “We want to thank Devon County Council for listening to residents and for taking bold steps to make travel by foot, wheels and bike safer and more attractive.

We urge Devon County Council and Exeter City Council to keep taking bold steps to change how Exeter travels, so that every child walking to school in Exeter can breathe cleaner air.
