I remember being approached at secondary school (before it closed down and was bulldozed) by the local National Front prick. He was pretty much shunned by everybody in the village back then. Even at the age of 13 I knew he was a wrong 'un and just blanked him. Times have changed, apparently.

I used to work in admin at Manchester Uni. I regularly saw our Chinese students wearing masks and like you I wondered why. A colleague who had been on a trip to Shanghai explained it to me and, yeah, it made sense. I was primed for it when Covid finally hit!

Mask wearing while infectious has been common cultural practise in China, Japan etc for decades. It's as much an act of common courtesy as anything else.

My wife and I were discussing this this morning - mask wearing mainly, but also just basic hygiene like regular hand washing. People still don't get that masks are meant to limit virus spread, they're not a magic shield to stop you catching it.
