Still playing with bobbin lace.

I’m currently obsessed with bobbin lace. The bobbins in question are little wooden or bone things, 10-15 cm long, and some of them are exquisite.

Are you poly? Or just…

Making lace on the train.

Update: added a strap.

Are you aware of blackwork? It’s an embroidery technique to make it look like you’re wearing lace.

(I did some during the pandemic lockdown period. Here’s my Death Star sampler.)

And..close. It only closes because the roller compresses and the latch is good.

I’ll probably add a strap today. Likely something tablet woven, because I have a bunch of those around.

Ad any other lacemaking this and that: the pin box, the prickers, scissors, spare thread, a tiny crochet hook, and a tick remover I use as a pin puller.
October 25, 2025 at 1:24 PM
Now start packing the box. First the stiffener, then the frame, then the pad. Add the roller and lay the bobbins on the folded pad. It’s a little chaotic, but that’s the reason for all that pinning and fiddling with crochet strips.
October 25, 2025 at 1:22 PM
Remove the stiffener from behind the pad that sits on the lid of the box.

Remove the roller and bobbins and set aside.
October 25, 2025 at 1:14 PM
Then unship the roller from the frame. It’s kept in place with a long elastic band that threads over the spindle and behind the hinge of the box.

Step two is to restrain the bobbins. I crocheted some little holders with spare yarn. (You can buy little boards with elastic but they’re not very firm for travel).

OK! Packing photos!

First, I pin a bit of linen over the working threads. That keeps things nicely in place during whatever hijinks will ensue.

Last weekend I made myself a bigger, flat pillow in the modern style. It’s made from a picture frame, some underfloor insulation foam, a few layers of felt, and some spare black linen.

So I made a travel bolster pillow out of this and that (an old leather satchel I’ve had for ages, some pipe lagging, some quilt batting, a few bits of spare wood and linen). I really like this little baby.

I love my vintage cookies pillow, but the dome can be kinda…dome-ey. You put a flat pattern on it and it lumps up a bit.

Because I’m cranky, I’ve decided to read every mention of that stupid ballroom as really being about a ballpit. Probably the one from Dashcon.
