Made a goose egg flan and learning how easy that is might prove to have been an infohazard.

Guess who’s decided that scary fireworks mean she’s allowed in the family room? 🤨🥰

Honestly, props to the marketer who realized that 1) kids can drink herbal tea and 2) they love having a special little drink just for them.

My 9yo was so delighted by these, and it’s so nice to get something consumable that isn’t just going to add to the clutter.

Gardening in a field that’s been conventional corn/soy for decades is quite the eye-opener on what that does to soil. 20yds of compost ought to start making a difference, but we’ve got a long journey ahead rebuilding this soil.

Is this what vegans do in grilling season? 🤔

(We’re not vegan, but falafel is delicious)

The kids got up to some kite flying while we were planting 🥰

And today my mom asked if I was planning to stay here the rest of the week or get a hotel closer to work, and said they understand either way, it’s a long way to be driving every day.

And another exciting development in the orchard: The graft of Crown Empire got chewed off by rabbits last fall, and I decided to leave the rootstock for a future field graft.

Lo, and behold! The tiny sliver of scion bark still attached had a dormant bud!

And most exciting, wild bloodroot, a day too early to catch it in full bloom 🥰

I didn’t get a good close-up, but the woods is absolutely carpeted in yellow trout lilies. So delightful, and a great sign the woods have been there the whole time (not regrowth on old farmland, though they’ve clearly been continuously harvested).

Gm, here’s some pretty things I found while looking for morels (no luck yet) in our woods last week.

Yeah, that Northwoods vibe always feels so cozy to me, so funny to me how many people find it spooky. Just feels like summer vacations.
