The marketplace seemed to grow fancier the farther we moved in. At a polished oak doorway that looked far too respectable for any thief’s hideout, Relias once again produced Nora’s dagger with a discreet flick of his wrist. A pair of uniformed men exchanged a glance, then stepped aside, gesturing us through without a word. We ushered upstairs as if this were the most natural arrangement imaginable. Where was the back alley? The smoky den of ne’er-do-wells? The whispered password and the shadowy informant with a dagger under the table? Instead, Vulture’s suite opened onto a balcony above the market, with airy shutters wide to let in the din below. Inside, though, it was another world entirely. Thick crimson rugs muffled our steps. A carved desk gleamed with orderly stacks of ledgers. And at the center of it all sat the dark-haired man himself—lean, sharp-eyed, and utterly at ease with us. Not even a quirked eyebrow! And what’s with the open shutters? Isn’t he afraid of assassins? Er—assassins that assassinate assassins, maybe? Honestly, the whole thing felt downright asinine. …Sorry.

Scratch under his chin.” “He’s not a dog!” Oliver smirked. “Oh, but he is a dog.” “Enough! You’re being rather crass about a problem that—” “Created in the 11th Year of Our Goddess, and the first Year of the Dog. Relias is a dog,” Oliver affirmed. “Raela, in comparison, was created six years before him, in the first Year of the Dragon.” “There’s no way you meant that the first time you said it.” “How wonderful it is that words can have more than one meaning,” he said with a nasty grin.

“Physics doesn’t like it, but I think the sun and the moon both revolve around the world,” she murmured as she labeled her Speranza-centric model. Oliver moved closer, bending down to peer at her scratchings. “Anyway… The stars. They must be fixed points in an outer layer of some sort,” she muttered angrily, speckling the perimeter of her model with swift stabs of her staff. I scratched my head, not sure why Nora was so discontented with her rationale so far. “Seems simple enough, I guess…” “You’re here,” Nora said, plonking her staff on Speranza. “Do you know how dense you’d be if it were true?” “Look, I know I’m not the brightest, but you don’t have to go insulting me!” Nora’s eyes almost rolled into the back of her head. “Literal density! Not intelligence. You’d be one of the densest objects in the universe! Speranza would have to be a gravity well, holding on to everyone and everything!” “So it’s just magic then,” I replied airily, knowing that would make her even more annoyed. “Magic.”

“Where do you think you’re going?” Oliver asked the instant I crossed Relias’s barrier. “Don’t scare me like that!” I twitched angrily. “At least have the decency to show yourself first!” His form coalesced slowly. “Relias placed that circle on the ground for a reason, you know.” “Didn't you say this area was clear? And I’ll be back shortly, so it’s no big deal.” “What are you going to do?” “Answering the call of nature,” I snapped. Oliver cocked his head to one side and listened for a moment. “That owl isn’t talking to you.” “What?” “Unless you’re after the mice she’s stalking. Then she has many unflattering things to say.” I groaned. “No, that’s not what that means…” “Another saying from the next world?” he sighed. “It should be pretty obvious!” He frowned. “Well, to me, it is not. Just tell me what you’re up to.”

“Wait,” Oliver hissed, turning toward me as he held out the ball of mist. “Within failure is opportunity.” I frowned. “Should I stab that thing instead?” He made a wry, oddly apologetic face. “Only if it comes to that. Try holding it in your hands first. Do whatever you need to do, but do not let it go.” I reached out and grabbed the mist with both hands, surprised to find it was more solid than I had expected. It was oddly squishy, and it held a faintly unsettling warmth. “It’s alive!” Nora gasped as it wriggled, tendrils of mist swarming around its orb-like perimeter, revealing a large, angry crimson eye at its core. “What the absolute fuck?!” I shrieked as its dilated pupil bounced around a few times before fixing on me. “You!” the General roared as he turned, zeroing in on our hiding spot. He charged, his sword dancing with shadowy flames as he drew it from his sheath. “Pour your will into it!” Oliver shouted as Relias and Nora prepared for impact.

“Ahh…” Oliver exhaled. “That would explain how he is unable to sense the demon inside that knight.” We all gave Oliver a hard look. “Why didn’t you just lead with that observation?!” Nora screeched. “Because you might have assumed it was a trap of my own making,” Oliver replied. “I simply walked you through the paces. Now you understand the situation properly.” I sneered. “I wouldn’t have assumed that!” “I was referring specifically to Lady Nora,” Oliver said, more serious than before. “She continues to confound every sense I have for perceiving will or intent.” His tone wasn’t sarcastic this time, only baffled. “The sage is easy enough to account for. His animus toward me is blatant—but more importantly, it follows a consistent, interpretable structure. And you? Well… you’re you.” Try as I might, I couldn’t tell if that was a compliment or a complaint.

Relias gave him a flat look. “I surmise you’ve been there before.” “Once,” Oliver said without a hint of guilt. “It stands to reason the door to Paradise is somewhere within.” “Are there really dragons there?” Nora and I asked in near-unison. “Yes,” said Relias. “No,” replied Oliver. They glared at each other. “Sorry, but I’m going with Relias on this one,” Nora declared. “If the Holy Man says there are dragons, then there are dragons.” “There is one dragon,” Oliver clarified. “So the answer to your question is no.” Nora sneered. “Semantics!”

It was absurdly and anachronistically perfect, with bright pink frosting piped in tiny, intricate rosettes and a neat line of silver sugar pearls circling its base. Did I pass out again? I looked at the basket of hazelnuts in my hands, suddenly feeling unimpressed. “This has to be a trap,” I muttered, inspecting the cake. “No. Simply payment for services rendered,” Oliver’s voice drifted from behind me. I whirled around. “Services rendered?” “It is customary to repay debts,” he replied in a maddeningly circular fashion. “Again, what services?” A nearby fork had somehow made its way into my grip. Oliver turned away. “Services equivalent to the cake in front of you.” Not knowing the specific occasion made it hard to accept. “I should probably share this with—” “It would be a dreadful insult to custom, having a human share a gift from the demon king.” “You said it was a payment.” Oliver set his teeth. “I misspoke. Remittance! Regardless, do not insult the custom.”

Why serve one of us fanatical lords who’ll risk your life in their petty wars? Banishment to a Sanctum might preserve you for a while, but only as a lord’s lackey. It’s much better to keep your head down and live among humans and hybrids, where you can feed off ambient animus without lifting a finger.” Oliver glanced at Relias, sniffed, and sighed. “You did know that, correct? The majority of Demonkind would rather avoid mortal disputes entirely.” “So basically, all the demons we’ve encountered are…” I started. “Sociopaths!” Nora finished. “I was going to say misrepresentative of the whole!” Nora shrugged. “Same thing. Mine’s just faster.”

I bet it’s like a whole sermon of curses strung together!” Relias lifted an eyebrow. “I fear you would find it disappointingly pedestrian,” he said at last. “I must concede you possess far greater fluency in such expressions.” “Allegedly,” Nora murmured, catching my surprised expression. “Allegedly.” “Ah.” I found a dirty spot on the wall to clean, unable to shake the feeling that I might have been a trigger for such an eruption.

Streaks of sunlight blurred through the dense overgrowth as we sped soundlessly through the forest. Oliver was cheating outrageously, his lower half nothing but swirling dark smoke. My chin was hooked over his right shoulder, and to my embarrassment, there was clear evidence I’d drooled on it at some point. “You can stop, I’m fine now.” He slowed, shifting his form to let me slide down his back onto my own feet. “The priest will make sure of it.” I stood on my own two feet for a moment before yielding to the lingering dizziness and sitting on the forest floor. “We’re not going to tell him about this.” “Miss Rachel. While I will concede I am no expert regarding anatomy or physiology, you cannot seriously expect me to accept that losing consciousness twice in under forty-eight hours qualifies as anything resembling normal human health!” Fantasy heroes pass out all the time without any lasting ill effects, so why can’t I?

No one says, ‘I want to be good to myself’ in an essay. That sounds selfish.” “But weren’t you the topic of the assignment?” “Yes, but this was about what I was going to do as an adult, in society. Shouldn’t I say I want to make the world a better place?” He wrinkled his nose. “Did you use those exact words?” “Well, yeah. It’s a common enough phrase that—” “You should have been more specific.” How dare he critique my writing! “Well, it’s not like I had a concrete plan on how to execute such a—” “Not about doing good,” he said, shaking his head. “About which world.”
