I write software for planes

ForeFlight, the application that I and thousands of other pilots depend upon for safety-critical information, was sold to private equity last year. They've now laid off half their staff without any knowledge transfer plan, citing offshoring and AI www.reddit.com/r/Foreflight...

“What would appear to be the first emergency use of Garmin’s Autoland system occurred on Saturday in Colorado. Social media posts from flight tracking hobbyists reported a King Air 200 squawked 7700 about 2 p.m. local time today.”

another attempt at fall colors, maybe a little more successful this time 🛩️

completed my wire harness for the panel upgrade, or at least the part I can do outside the plane.

still plenty more to run for engine sensors, audio, and other bits and bobs

I wasn't quite able to catch the peak fall colors but nonetheless I had a nice sightseeing flight this morning 🛩️

my overpriced blinky LEDs have arrived

test fit panel came today. already made quite a few changes to the next version, but I'll take it out to the plane tomorrow to check the overall fit, which was the primary goal

really feels like it should be a bit cheaper for some LEDs

Another 4.2 hours added to the logbooks today. Made it a little over half way home. I did about 140kts ground speed most of the way during cruise at ~60% power, and I only burned about 20 gallons. Some minor issues with the radio/intercom, so might upgrade that sooner than originally planned.

first Long EZ flight in the books and officially a plane owner! 🛩️

lovely morning for some flying 🛩️💺

I've been mocking up a new panel for the soon to be my Long EZ. I've still got some details to work out once I can take more measurements in the plane, but the tentative plan is to put in a GNX 375, G5, and GI 275, and eventually add in a GFC 500 autopilot and GDU 460 (G3XT display)

I'm no artist but I had to draw up a new profile pic to match

I had a great time shadowing a pre-buy inspection this weekend. Generally things went pretty well, and we didn't find anything too major. As long as nothing catastrophic happens between now and then, I should become a plane owner at the end of September :)

i'm a bit skeptical about the efficacy of this:

"FAA selected CGI Federal, Inc., to work on modernizing the NOTAM system [...] on an accelerated schedule to deliver [...] by July 2025, and the FAA is targeting deployment of the operational service by September 2025."

I just finished reading "Flight of Passage" by Rinker Buck. It's a phenomenal and charming recount of him and his brother Kern crossing the U.S. at age 15 and 17 in a Piper Cub they restored. I'd highly recommend it if you enjoy a good aviation adventure story, but it has much else to offer too! 🛩️📚
