We are a grass roots Community group. Successfully put pressure on TfL to replace escalators Cutty Sark DLR (May 2026). Now pushing for TfL to manage Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Our website 👉 https://www.escalate-now.com/
So a similar meeting will be convened with Newham for Woolwich FootTunnel? Yet last July there was apparently a meeting with Newham Council & that an agreement to share costs was agreed. The hope was to complete the works by January 2025. Were we dreaming?

The tunnels are cross borough transport infrastructure. Why can’t TfL take responsibility rather than just one borough fighting for funding from another? Can’t they adjust LIP funding to the three boroughs to cover costs? Something must be done!

Greenwich Foot Tunnel should be a KEY Thames crossing - but with the North Side lift broken for months, disabled people, parents with prams, and cyclists say they're being cut off from jobs, family and everyday life.

Londoners slam broken foot tunnel lifts dividing north and south of Thames
A residents’ campaign group says years of neglect have left the tunnel lifts unreliable, unsafe, and excluding the most vulnerable

We’ve watched countless people struggling up the steps. The problem is, they’re also damaging the treads.

The tunnels were originally governed by the London-wide body, the GLC, and previously by the London County Council.

It is for the government and Parliament to change the law in order to transfer responsibility for the tunnels to TfL/GLA.

Can understand why TfL don’t want them. Overall funding issues for local Councils aside, it’s ridiculous the Councils can’t get their act together jointly to sort them, though.
While this may be ‘unique infrastructure’ it’s not uncommon for highway matters to fall between authorities & need sorting.

TfL has the clout and know-how to run these crucial cross river, cross borough links

This has dragged on for far too long. The prospect of a proper service ever being provided by RBG is low.

We think this is best managed by one authority rather than three cash-strapped London boroughs & genuinely believe London’s cross-transport authority is better placed with its resources, capacity and clout with contractors to manage both of these key cross-river links for their 5,000 users a day.
