It would be a disaster if the Smithsonian was "saved" (in terms of funding) but it lost its ability to help us accurately understand the past.

I think most of us in the history and museum fields regard Lonnie Bunch with a tremendous amount of respect. He's earned it through an illustrious career.
But his legacy will be what he does in the next weeks and months.
We need him as a voice of resistance.

Everything I see from authoritarian experts says you must resist. Anything seen as a willingness to collaborate is taken by authoritarians as an invitation to keep moving forward.

I thought this was a key quote from a Smithsonian employee in this article:

Unfortunately, it sounds like the Trump team is already getting help from inside the Smithsonian.
A man understandably refused to hand over his ID or get out of the car for a bunch of masked thugs who refused to identify themselves.
And when he drove away, they opened fire on him.
This isn’t how you do any sort of enforcement when your goal is to uphold the law. This is gangsterism.
