The juxtaposition of these articles – one conflating pro-Palestinian activism with murderous antisemitism, and the other downplaying the concrete dangers of antisemitism, as manifested in a nefarious salute by one of the world’s most powerful people – provides a gateway into the Chronicle’s universe, and its aggressive campaign against any demonstration of solidarity with Palestinians. I was going to agree, because the image does put words in your mouth basically.

But then, if a commenter or analyst is explaining something, it doesn't mean they endorse the thing, they just are making sense of it.

PS how does *strategically* avoiding Engler score a point for incompetence theory?

The second possibility is that the event was organized when it was to avoid having a French-language debate with a sixth candidate who actually speaks French involved. Had Yves Engler been on that stage, the entire thing would have looked even more ridiculous. Engler, an Anglophone, speaks French. He would have been the only candidate who Quebecers could actually understand, and they would have heard a radical, anti-imperialist message that the party wouldn’t want to be the only thing Quebecers heard in a debate. For the party, projecting an NDP that is Anglophone and uninterested in Quebec is a better political play than projecting an NDP where the only coherant soundbites played in the French media would be “Get Canada out of NATO now.” Another point for my incompetence theory. The party has not yet vetted Engler, and it’s possible that they rushed through with the French-language debate as fast as they could, to avoid having him on that stage (which is also why I think it was unstrategic for the Engler campaign to wait to submit his candidacy).

NEWS: Ottawa Crown seeks 2-year sentence for ex-city lawyer who defaced National Holocaust Monument with "FEED ME" graffiti (re: Gaza genocide) www.cbc.ca/9.6998540

“FEED ME” and red paint on the National Holocaust Monument In the early hours of 2025-06-09, the words feed “FEED ME” were graffitied onto the side of the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, along with splashes of red paint. The culprit eventually pled guilty to a charge of ‘mischief to a war memorial.’ The vandalism was widely perceived and portrayed as an act of antisemitism: “This is pure hate against Jews” – Iddo Moed; “This doesn’t feel like it’s about Israel” – CIJA; “It’s ridiculous to say that this was not motivated by hate” – Lawrence Greenspon. In a bail ruling, the judge stated it “could be seen as weaponizing through extreme hatred, targeting the vulnerabilities of a section of our community.” In his plea, the culprit acknowledged the pain caused to the Jewish community; his lawyer explained afterwards, “He looks forward to demonstrating that his motivation was rooted in a desire to call attention to human suffering, not to cause harm or spread intolerance.” The Monument commemorates the Jewish and other victims of Nazi Germany and its collaborators, and is also a tribute to the survivors. Its Committee has a duty to “ensure that the atrocities that occurred during this dark period of history are remembered and that we never forget the lessons of the past.” So while the graffiti on the Monument is seen by some as an attack on Jews, it can also be perceived as aligning with the overarching principles the Monument represents against genocide in general. But Monument Committee co-chair Lawrence Greenspon stated, “It’s high time that the leaders of the world, including our own prime minister, stop blaming Israel for the situation in Gaza. It is not a situation that was created by Israel, nor is it one that is being continued by Israel,” and that this ‘unfounded’ criticism of Israel “is fueling the fires of hatred which cause these types of crimes.” The other perspective can be understood via Omer Bartov... Drawing upon a wide range of influences from Bordiga, Marcuse, and Mattick to contemporary writers such as Lazzarato, Bifo, Toscano, and Endnotes, the authors trace the evolution of the “fascist solution” to capitalist crisis from its roots in the 20th century to today, emphasizing its tendency toward mutation, evolution, and adaptation. Among their important conclusions is that what sets the “new fascisms” apart from those of the past is not their emergence within the framework of democracy, which was already true of their 20th century predecessors. Rather, the difference lies in how contemporary liberal states “were able to perfect fascist policies and allow them to be deployed even within a democratic framework, to the point that they have been able to build an industry around crime and insecurity as justifications for the establishment of these policies.” In this respect, it is all the more striking that criticism of the fascistic tendencies of the Trump administration has not been accompanied by a thoroughgoing

An American fascism need not bear a likeness to Italian fascism or German National Socialism. Rather, its potential is “deeply enmeshed in histories of enslavement and extermination, dispossession, and domination that continue to shape the US present, materially and ideologically.”3 In a 2023 article, Alberto Toscano takes up the work of black radical thinkers to analyze the fascist potential of the American body politic and its governing institutions. As Toscano reminds us, “Angela Y. Davis and George Jackson identified the US state apparatus as a site of the reemergence or indeed a perfecting of certain features of (European) historical fascisms.”4 Of particular interest in Davis’ and Jackson's analysis is that, by developing it from the collective experiences of people racially excluded from the entitlement system of liberal democracy, they no longer use the term fascism to refer only to a specific political movement or form of dictatorial rule, but understand it as a mechanism of power intrinsic to capitalism, which had its breeding ground in colonial processes three centuries earlier. Fascism no longer needs to be embodied in a specific party-militia but is now assimilated into the political mechanisms and institutions that make up Western liberal democracies, a central feature of which is the “generalization of racialized prison terror in society at large.”5 This approach to “democratic forms of fascism” is shared by Theodor W. Adorno, who stated in a 1959 lecture that, “In my opinion, the survival of National Socialism in democracy is potentially much more threatening than the survival of fascist tendencies against democracy.”6

contend is what animates much of the fervor behind the support of the alt-right. A French term exported into English, ressentiment is an experience of hostility directed at that which a subject identifies as the cause of their frustration. While Nietzsche focused his analysis of ressentiment on Christianity, more recent engagement with this emotion has focused on it as a class emotion that invokes particular calls to action. Here class antagonism and ressentiment is predicated on the belief that a particular class of individuals have gained an unfair advantage. If we take into account what has been termed — and I am very sympathetic to this — “the vanishing male worker” in the US, and the fact that 16 per cent of prime-age men are unemployed or in precarious forms of labour, we can identify and understand the emergence of a distinct class of males living in their parents’ basements that have according to Dale Beran found their way on to 4chan. These men face the continuous painful reminder of their failure to participate in the working world due to corporate disinvestment in the US economy and the loss of opportunities to find working wages in factories. Concomitantly women and immigrants are entering into their private worlds of video games and what remains of the job market respectively. And so in the facing the brunt of the abstract immaterial faceless economy, alt-right masculinities turn their brutal hostilities to women and immigrants as the source of their frustrations and failures: it is women and immigrants that have been given an unfair advantage; it is only in the creation of a safe space for people of a European descent that America will be great again. So this is a kind of classic example of victimhood. <…>

PPS when I went to get alt-text for the above excerpt you used, I learned it's not in the NDP rules www.ndp.ca/sites/defaul... so it is Elections Canada rules? Which like I said, you knew/know from the mainstream media articles what EC was on record as saying, but you are insinuating something else.
Matthew McKenna, a spokesperson for Elections Canada, said that it wasn’t against the law for Engler to raise funds in advance of his candidacy being approved by the NDP. “There’s nothing in the Canada Elections Act that prevents any individual from raising money for any reason,” said McKenna. Article content McKenna did caution that Engler could still face legal penalties for incorrectly reporting such contributions in his annual tax returns.

PS reading it again, I guess accepting donations doesn't automatically make him considered a leadership candidate - it only means that *if they accept him* then they'll consider him to have been a candidate from when he started fundraising.
