She/her🏳️‍⚧️ | Writer | I rant about stuff I like | Xeno series especially | Currently revisiting Fire Emblem Three Houses with an unnecessary amount of detail
Is this an inconsistency?
Yeah. Aelfric may have his suspicions but he wouldn't act like this if Jeralt's lie was being taken into account

Does it bother me?
Nah, this is a pretty minor detail in the grand scheme of things

Once more I laugh because Jeralt is the worst liar ever and nobody buys for a second that Byleth isn't the baby he had with Sitri.
It's doubly funny that Aelfric is the one to just casually bring it up. He doesn't even care Jeralt is trying to keep it a secret, he knows everyone knows

-terribly interesting, what with it being a giant square with little more to it other than special tiles scattered here and there

Also, random Death Knight because why not

That is not a complaint, I love the Death Knight. He has nothing to do with the plot but still shows up for 1s, what a king

Unfortunately, I can't say Ch2 is very enjoyable in terms of gameplay. It's just more same-turn ambush spawns shenanigans. It's a bit tamer because you know exactly when they'll spawn and in which general direction, but the amount of enemies they throw at you is absurd and the map isn't exactly-

Chapter 2 is fine when it comes to story. It's still establishing basic exposition on Abyss and its contentious existence within the church. With Aelfric now in place, act 1 can finally come to an end and we can get into the meat of things with the Chalice of Rising plot

I think I already brought this up once before, but my personal headcanon for Abyss' origins is that it was an ancient Agarthan city long before Sothis arrived in Fódlan. Back when they weren't nearly as futuristic, but still adept at building underground metropolis

Abyss opens up a whole world of opportunities to reexamine the game from. Is characters, their relationship with the preestablished cast, the elaboration of concepts like Rhea's experiments, the ancestry of Crests and the social disparity of Fódlan...

It enriches this already magnificent setting

After being stuck with the same old boring monastery map (which is pretty good, but after 21 uninterrupted chapters with no variation it gets old), finally having a new hub to traverse is a great change of pace even if Abyss is pathetically small in comparison.

Speaking of underground denizens...

Abyss!

I love Abyss. The mere idea of Garreg Mach having a literal underground society where those rejected by conventional norm and law end up in is just brimming with creativity. A sprawling underground city full of impoverished outcasts. Love it.

I guess I now get to gush over how good of a battle theme "The Shackled Wolves" is.
It's adventurous, heroic, exciting, energetic... It capsules the essence of the fun adventure to help own the mysterious denizens living in Fódlan's underground that is Cindered Shadows to a T

The battle itself is nothing too crazy, but it does get point for an unconventional layout forcing you to bring your units from point A to point B while defeating everything in sight to claim victory. Bonus points for effectively introducing the four new classes the DLC brings with it
December 4, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Yuri's the charismatic yet shady leader, Balthus is the meathead, Constance is the arrogant noble and Hapi is Hapi

They are a really strong set of characters and the campaign will make full use of them to tell its story. I'll make it no secret that I love these guys more than any other class
December 4, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Cindered Shadows' first chapter is short and sweet. It is as perfect an introduction to the Ashen Wolves and Abyss could be. The scenes get to the point while still allowing the characters to flourish. You immediately get the gist of what each of these rapscallions are about.
December 4, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Remember how Linhardt is basically my favorite male character in the game because of his sass and how little he cares about most things? He's an icon of legend we can still empathize with

Yeah, Hapi is basically on the same wavelength as him.

You can probably guess who my favorite Wolf is.
December 4, 2025 at 9:11 PM
It's funny how throughout the first cutscenes meeting the Ashen Wolves, everyone gets to say their piece to the main gang to perfectly convey what they're about.

And then there's Hapi.
Hapi just stands around and says nothing throughout the entire scene.
And I love that for her.

-up the inevitable clash in the Battle of the Eagle and Lion.

Speaking of the teamup, one of CS's biggest appeals is that it's THE only way to play with all three Lords at once (Hopes aside). It's so fun and gratifying to see them work together for once, despite them being nothing but incompatible
December 4, 2025 at 9:11 PM
There's a lot of debate on when exactly Cindered Shadows is supposed to take place in (keeping in mind this is an alternate universe, of course. As is, CS is incompatible with any of the four routes). Personally I've always liked to imagine it was between Chapters 6 and 7, with this teamup setting-
December 4, 2025 at 9:11 PM
Oh, I missed them so much.
After the bleakness of Silver Snow's latter half, it's good to see these guys alive and young again in their academy days. No war, no death, just good old school shenanigans.
