Don is such a good character.

Important nugget of information: The oft-mentioned laws suppressing Choujin begun specifically in response to the fears of their use in warfare.

Yet again, the control by the state comes down to a desire for control of power.

A lot of this episode deals with the culture-clash between Dan and the younger Dee, who is his complete opposite; Younger, with long hippie hair and a belief in the idealism of Choujin. Neither is truly wrong, but their contrast highlights the distance in generations the war has formed.

This appears selfish in a sense, but that's where the perspective being offered here is important. Dan isn't a Choujin of Justice, he's just a regular man looking to maintain a career he's proud of. When faced with evil, he defaults to protecting what's most important to him - His own life.

Frankly, given some of the shit which has come out over the years about the likes of AKB48 and Johnny's, having the Shocker-expy be an entertainment company is *very* appropriate.

This was set up last episode, but we get the full exposure of Teito's goals here, taking advantage of the counterculture specifically to control Choujin. Tozaki's rationale here is a fittingly banal one, indicative of how evil needs no malice to drive it, just a desire for results.
December 3, 2025 at 4:06 AM
Gotta respect Dan. Despite looking like a mushroom crossbred with a PS1 character, he's a shockingly mature and well-adjusted man, genuinely content for him and his friends to hold down stable work even if they're not in the big leagues.

Unfortunately, Dee doesn't see it that way.

I'll admit I'm not terribly familiar with the history of Japanese music to draw a direct comparison, but the Angel Stars' introduction highlights an important aspect of the setting, that being the inherently politicization in Choujin as an identifier, and how Teito relates to that.

Remember that.

First look (proper) at the detective kids! Inspiration-wise, it's a very clear one; 70s children's mecha for Gigander Seven, and Mitsuteru Yokoyama for the kids. While technically separate motifs, Yokoyama was instrumental to early mecha, so it fits together fairly cleanly.

The worldbuilding and lore of the series really is shockingly dense. Characters and details spiral out from each other near constantly.
December 3, 2025 at 3:29 AM
Genuinely laughed at this bait and switch. These poor guys really are way in over their heads.
December 3, 2025 at 3:29 AM
Heh, this lowkey feels like a joke you'd see in a Shooter-era Marvel book.
December 3, 2025 at 3:26 AM
More than just being the comic relief episode, this seems to double as the perspective of "regular" people in the world, a gang of young, struggling entertainers who are suddenly thrown into the world of Choujin against their will. That's a useful nuance to add, and I like how grounded Dan is.
December 3, 2025 at 3:21 AM
So I guess this is the comic relief episode, then.

I am....not entirely sure how to feel about that, but thus far every episode has given an important POV on the setting, so we'll see where this one goes.

You ever listen to a song so good that your mind is transferred to the Vietnam War.

Hnn, I genuinely never considered the role which Las Vegas acts might've had on the JP entertainment scene, but it's a shockingly logical connection when thought about.

Also, knowing what we do, Emi making this a date is *immensely* fucked up. Good god.
December 3, 2025 at 2:59 AM
It'd been hinted at before, but this is the first explicit point making it clear that Choujin are now full-on the targets of an authoritarian crack-down in the name of national security. Which in-turn points to why Jiro and Raito have turned the ways they have, justice being what it is.

What a pure child. Sure hope nothing awful happens to him!
December 3, 2025 at 1:24 AM
So, a little note: I remember *most* of the stories in the first cour on the very basic level, but this? I legitimately had forgotten this one even existed.

This will be interesting.

We pick up with Furouta in the later parts of the timeline, and we're shown that, since the incident with Campe, he has matured a *lot*, even displaying a mindset similar to Jiro. Say what you want about the horror of learning you committed genocide, but kid has clearly tried to make the most of it.

Dragon Ball at least had a lot of sincere attempts at filler that included the involvement of Toriyama.

One Piece's anime is just infamously unwatchable in many spots due to how badly distorted the pacing is (compounded by deeper issues with Oda's work).

And if the knife wasn't harsh enough, we get a reminder that this is *all* the Bureau's fault.
December 3, 2025 at 12:19 AM
This is not a story of heroes.

All those who believe in that, watch as your ideals are ripped open and devoured.
