Looking at photos of rat tail maggots that seem like a good match to my eye. Sorry the photos are not great.

The live ones are gone but the dead ones definitely make it seem like the tail is part of their structure and not just slime.

Trash can full of sticks that had accumulated lots of water. I love the idea that these might be for breathing. I dumped the water so I cannot check where the were relative to water level .
