👏

An inspiration for our efforts to achieve in Dublin what @playingout.bsky.social did in the UK!

(the beauty of the temporary closure approach to street play provision is that it's flexible enough to reflect changing needs and demands of communities) #d7playstreets

my alternative thesis is that our planning and delivery of infrastructural projects, esp. transport and housing, relies too heavily on engineers’ and economists’ visions and priorities (which gives rise to familiar issues)

TIL the last time there was a by-election in Dublin Central was 2009 and Paschal Donohoe actually contested it (he finished behind Maureen O'Sullivan, but ahead of Ivana Bacik).

There was also an Immigration Control candidate, who finished ahead of the Workers’ Party’s Malachy Steensen.

Well, that was the plan, not sure if it still is...the current sports fields would be the only remaining open green space (but not open to the public) ...

contrast that with the sketch on the right which doesn't include the railings & padlocked gates which are added in the final implementation!

In the case of the Mechanical Turk, AGI also stands for "A Guy Inside"

One of my favourite bits of Mechanical Turk trivia is where Napoleon I introduces breaching experiments into his games against the machine, predating Garfinkel's tic-tac-toe shenanigans by a over a century...

This is going to be fascinating....the local elections in the NIC and Cabra-Glasnevin might be more of a guide as to where the votes are for various parties/candidates....

Came to it after reading about 80s MU motion to ban synthesisers (to protect live orchestra players' livelihoods) and discovered "needle time" - restrictions on amount of recorded music that could be broadcast by stations (to protect professional musicians' opportunities)...

Fascinating reading about The British Musicians’ Union via www.muhistory.com - based on project (with accompanying book) conducted at the University of Glasgow by its School of Culture and Creative Arts...

(still amazes me that DCC’s approach to recruitment is mostly stuck around a system which enforces fixed distinctions between a limited number of ‘technical’ paths - e.g. engineers, planners and architects - and ‘administrative’ staff)

We’ve added more and more vehicles, of increasing size, into a finite physical space that was designed for fewer, and smaller, vehicles.

In Ireland, we went from approx.700,000 cars in 1985 (for a pop of 3.5m) to 2.5m cars in 2023 (pop. 5million).

(There was also an unexpected victory yesterday for Daniil Dubov against Praggnanandhaa in the Chess World Cup 2025. As with football, the chess commentariat often bemoan the excessive emphasis on preparation in contemporary chess and the lack of variety in modern play. Dubov's different...!)

An incredibly large proportion of the most interesting (to me) sites on the internet come from a single person's dedication to a niche interest.

Here's one of those sites, which is all about World Football Elo Ratings, including historical ratings: www.eloratings.net/about

The story, whether political or personal, like any grand narrative, applies a closed structure to our experience "that has nothing to do with life as I have come to know it ..."
