Its like trying to get someone into video games & dropping them straight into bloodborn or super meat boy
We put people off ttrpgs because they think ALL EXPERIENCES are going to be like this & unless they have some Hella investment they'll dip

I've been saying the same for ages. D&D is a pretty bad game to use as an introduction to the hobby because it's relatively obtuse, especially for new GMs.
More than once I look wistfully over to board gamers who understand that you induct a newbie with Ticket to Ride, not Too Many Bones.

Every time I say that D&D is not a game that's easy to learn, I get pushback from people who've only tried D&D, Pathfinder, and Shadowrun.
It's solidly medium crunch.
There are much better games to use as an intro and I think, if D&D weren't the gateway to the hobby, we'd have more people.
