Most admissions were caused by Moscow's 'unique' heating system. A network of steam pipes exists under the streets—decaying Soviet-era infrastructure. Spontaneous high pressure steam and water leaks were common. Injuries were extensive: potentially as fatal as flame injuries of the same size.

The UK Children's Fire and Burns Trust asked me to attend Moscow's flagship paediatric facility for major burn injury during 1999. As a UK burns dietitian, my role was to exchange ideas with the Russian equivalent of a clinical dietetic department, and to deliver nutrition training to medical staff.
