The press bestowed on Goetz the moniker “ ‘Death Wish’ Vigilante,” a nod to the 1974 film in which a craggy-faced Charles Bronson hunts muggers around New York City in reprisal for a home invasion that cost the life of his wife and the innocence of his daughter. The movie was followed by Death Wish II, in which the star, still craggy-faced, hunts down gang members in Los Angeles in reprisal for a home invasion during which his daughter was abducted and then raped. A third film in the series, set once again in New York City, had been in the works for years, but Bronson was hesitant to dust off the role, so the studio offered it to Chuck Norris, who declined. According to the film’s producer, Bronson changed his mind after the Goetz subway shooting. Released a few weeks before Thanksgiving 1985, Death Wish III portrays yet another cycle of violence. Despite terrible reviews, it was a box-office success. During publicity interviews, Bronson was frequently asked about what seemed to be a real-life inspiration. “I get asked a lot about that, and I never say a word. Anything coming from me might influence the jury,” he told a reporter. “Let’s just say I don’t approve of muggers.”

A small but telling example: shortly before my memoir The Little Way Of Ruthie Leming came out, a radical young freelancer named Elon Green wrote a piece in Slate saying a book will be coming out soon that purport to be the story of a kind and good small-town teacher who died early of cancer. Sounds great, he said, but we must not forget that its author, Rod Dreher, is a homophobe — and therefore, we must boycott this book.
