someday a like, regular average guy normal residential electrican is going to come along, open up this switch box, and immediately think “wow, the person who did this must have been an engineer”

‪underneath some plastic (which i am guessing is some kind of EMI shielding?) we find the power supply board. it looks like a new one could be swapped in somewhat easily, although i haven’t had much luck finding ebay listings with working PSUs that are otherwise broken…‬

the MCU is on the far side of the power supply board, presumably so that it can be close to the LCD. it’s connected to the switch board by a little cable bundle
September 21, 2025 at 5:46 PM
there’s really not a whole lot of PCBA going on here, which is unsurprising since it’s just a Layer 2 switch; basically just a switching ASIC, a MCU, and what looks like SFP transceiver VRM and hotswap bits
September 21, 2025 at 5:44 PM
closeup of the mainboard; i think it’s pretty funny how there’s a normal finned heatsink on what i assume is the switching ASIC that’s then thermal padded into the big black chunk of aluminum
September 21, 2025 at 5:42 PM
…and that’s pretty much the entire switch!
September 21, 2025 at 5:29 PM
…well, that was underwhelming

Ubiquiti thought they could outsmart me with this warranty-voiding sticker over the last case screw, but the joke is on them because i bought this thing used on ebay and it doesn’t HAVE a “warranty”
