Our baby hasn't been to any library storytimes or baby activity classes yet, but she sure has attended a lot of student professional development events at Smith College.

I think we as a field would actually be happier if we all collectively admitted that things are very bad right now, instead of pretending that everything is fine, and that all of us will somehow be the lucky ones.

Our life here is so idyllic, but it's hard to enjoy that because I know we'll have to move away in a couple years.

Do I leave academia so we can maybe stay? But I really like it and I'm kinda good at it... :(

I have to fan-girl for a minute here. My friend @rosvall-lab.bsky.social built an app to gather data on bird behavior during the 2024 solar eclipse. 10,000+ citizen scientists contributed (including my kids), and the resulting paper was published in Science today!

Total solar eclipse triggers dawn behavior in birds: Insights from acoustic recordings and community science

When our 10-week-old baby is hungry, she mimes putting a bottle in her mouth. She's literally inventing her own sign language, it's amazing.

I need to do some work stuff ASAP this week, very important for my career... But the baby is figuring out how to make little sounds right now and the only thing I want to do is sit here and watch her do that. 😭

A useful lesson I learned in graduate school: sometimes a “bad” model fit to good data is still useful. Sometimes it will trick you into making baseless claims. Science is knowing how to figure out the difference

The ubiquity of baby pull-on 'onesies' makes no sense. Are most babies actually chill with having their big heads squished through a stretchy opening in jersey knit fabric? Why aren't there more onesie outfits that snap/zip/button in front?
