In 2022, two men were convicted for driving under the influence. Frank in a cheap, old car, unemployed with debt. Jakob in a new, expensive Audi, worth millions. Their cases were nearly identical, but their sentences could not have been further apart.

This disparity in wealth translates to a disparity in freedom. Frank is sent to prison, Jakob is not.

We look at the almost identical cases of Jakob and Frank. They were both convicted for intoxicated driving, under similar circumstances. But their financial circumstances are worlds apart– Jakob is sitting on millions of assets while Frank is sitting on a pile of debt.
