Dental surgeon: [After detailing complications of wisdom tooth removal] Would you like me to remove it today?
Me: Yes, if it’s simple enough.
DS: No. It’s not simple.
Me: Oh. Um … if it’s possible, then?
DS: Yes.
Me: Yes please, then.
[No more than 60 seconds later:]
Me: . o O (Seemed pretty simple)

Rewatched « À bout de souffle » for the first time in 30 years ahead of « Nouvelle Vague » tomorrow. Jean-Paul Belmondo’s character was flesh-creepingly unbearable. 😩

Went to Cambridge to see “No Other Choice” (Cineworld Ely can’t be arsed to show it). A dark and often funny tale about personal responsibility within the constraints of the capitalist system which might have used its 2hrs 20 better, but has great performances and inventive camerawork. #FilmSky

My ref was a phone pic of the TV screen taken from across the room. I hoped an imperfect image would discourage me from fussing about precise colours or details. If you can’t tell that it’s Sophie Thatcher then no matter - I’ve enjoyed the practice! Gouache 7” x 7.5” in my watercolour sketchbook.

So pleased to be able to see little known ‘70s films like this thanks to TPTV. Grief and the supernatural are intertwined in ambiguous ways in this sad tale with an atmospheric synth score and some melodramatic set pieces. As a whole it doesn’t quite make sense, but can’t fault the vibes. #HorrorSky
She wanted to start a new life... the supernatural had other ideas...

I’m trying to paint more seriously this year, but wherever I set up my paints, this creature distracts me.

What a depressing way to make films - to appeal to people who don’t give enough of a shit to unglue their eyes from their phones to watch them properly.

Watched “Amer” (2009), in which gothic horror, eurotica and giallo are used to tell a story in three acts. It was an arty, in some ways quite challenging watch, but I couldn’t take my eyes or ears off it. #HorrorSky

Late start to the morning, as I was up at 2am finishing Shroud by @aptshadow.bsky.social. A great read.

@helenintgarden.bsky.social I was mistaken for a Helen today. An older woman in a coffee shop stared at me for a while, then tapped my arm and said, "Are you Helen?" I said, "No. If I was, though, what would happen? Something exciting?" to which she replied, "No." So that was odd. 🙃

A walk before breakfast. So cold, but the 8am light on Ely Cathedral was warm and gorgeous.

“Marty Supreme” was this year’s New Year’s Day Cinema Watch with my family (a grand tradition going back to, er, 2025). Glad I gave this movie a go, as it delivered many things I REALLY wasn’t expecting.

Letterboxd tells me my highest-rated film of this year was “Sinners”, my lowest “A House of Dynamite”.

Classic British horror-comedy-thriller anthology “Dead of Night” is available on Channel4. 1940s types smoke their ears off while recounting spooky goings-on in glorious old-school BBC English. Stranglings! Cursed mirrors! Psychobabble! And the OG evil ventriloquist’s dummy. Great fun. #HorrorSky

It’s 3 days since I requested to cancel Cineworld Unlimited. I had a reply double-checking that I don’t want to keep « creating cine-magic together » but nothing since my repeated instruction to cancel. Are @cineworld.bsky.social waiting another 2 days till my next payment’s due before cancelling..?

Happy Watch-A-Yorgos-Lanthimos-Short-At-Every-Tea-Break Day! Unfortunately, only two of his short films are available, so I’m now reduced to watching his ad for Prada just so I can get another cup of tea in.
