Yes! Find editors who read and love the genre you're writing in. I love offering free samples. It hasn't gotten me work yet, but it has gotten me testimonials.
I have cut my samples down from 2,000 to 1,000 words because I realized that's enough to tell me if I'm right for the job.

You earned it! My reward for getting work done will be to spend time relaxing with a jigsaw puzzle.

I've turned down work that I'm not right for and that isn't right for me. I love that I can pick who to work with, what I want to learn, and what times of the day to work. Yeah, it's taking me longer than I want to get work. But I'm not stressed out the way I was working for someone else.

I love your keyboard! And your cat is also adorable. Cats make great editing partners. They'll provide their wise thoughts by walking across your keyboard.

Jigsaw and word puzzles make me happy. Do you have any independent bookstores near you? For us, a bookstore trip means hitting the local Barnes & Nobel. Getting outside is a terrific way to shake the cobwebs.

Ah, so she keeps him in check.

And I can't fix it. Oh well.

Ah! I put "you're" for "your." Fixing it now.

Perfection doesn't exist in novels, because all novels have a few errors in them. But you should always aim to get your novel to be its best. Just don't keep yourself from moving forward out of fear of it not being perfect.

So many authors out there need help getting their plots and characters looking great or need help with grammar and spelling. But don't neglect you're own writing, especially if you've got a story to tell. My focus is now on getting clients, but if I ever think of a plot for a novel, I'm writing it.

Each scene needs to have a purpose and move the story forward. If two characters are travelling from one scene to the next, there's no need to include all their conversations. Unless one of the conversations is needed for the plot. Like one admitting they hid some evidence to protect the other.

Ooh, I haven't seen these two compared yet.
She was so vain that she didn't care if blood was pouring from a vein; she had to get her makeup on perfectly before letting the EMTs into her house.

Now THAT'S how you tell someone they mean everything to you. Although, if someone said that to me, I'd be a little scared because I wouldn't want anyone committing arson to prove their love.

Getting your manuscript looking the best it can by self-editing it can really help reduce costs.
If an editor offers super low prices, be cautious. They could be properly trained and want experience (good results). Or they could be scammers who toss your work into AI (poor results).

That sounds pretty messy. The formula does eventually end up in the diaper. But not in such a direct route.

I never knew that! Now I'll be trying to think of a word with "tk" in it. Ooh, how about "portkey"? I guess this tip wouldn't have worked well for Rowling.

I especially love the reading aloud part. I've caught quite a few errors doing that. And sometimes the slang word fits better than the properly spelled one. A teenager is likely to say, "I dunno" rather than "I don't know."

Well, that's an odd conversation to have. Has the other person set things on fire before?

It's a fun book to randomly flip through.

People, stop letting AI do your research. Do it yourself! It takes more time, but providing the public with faulty information is harmful.

Oh, that looks like so much fun! I've never gone to a book event or an in-person writer's event. I'm a bit afraid I wouldn't be welcome because I'm a copyeditor/proofreader rather than an author. I'd have to find one that's in my part of New Jersey.
