“So now is the time to come to the aid of the BBC. It needs all the friends it can get (and that includes members of the current government, who might like to be a bit more voluble in their support).
Because I promise you this: you’ll miss it when it’s gone.” By @robinlustig.bsky.social

Absolutely right. I criticise BBC News, because we need it to be as good as we know it can be. People like Farage criticise the BBC, because they work for its competitors and don't want it to exist.
🎯 Davey is spot on. "We can have criticism of the BBC, but within that, we need to recognise how valuable an institution it is [and how] precious to our country. And that's one of the reasons why people like President Trump and Nigel Farage, want to undermine the BBC." 👏🏽~AA

It's straightforward to find what Trump actually did say on January 6.

First he said they were going to walk down to the Capitol (which BBC used).

And cheer on our brave Senators and Congressmen.

Then he made it clear that the ones he meant were strong Republicans prepared to overturn the result.

Last night, Dick Tice launched Students4Reform (See what they did there, the scamps? They replaced "for" WITH THE NUMBER).

It will be led by Matt Goodwin, a man in his mid-forties, and it looked exactly like you imagine. ~AA

What court might hear a charge from Trump - US court, UK court? And what charge might he try to make?

The way he's extorted money and obedience from US media outfits makes me fear the prospect.

Trump incited violence on 6 January 2021.

An outside producer made a bad edit when there's plenty of material to show that.

Today Trump is granting pardons to dozens of people involved in that day's attempt to sabotage the handover of power.

The BBC doesn't report, but flagellates itself.

This bill is not "another demand from the Labour government". It's not even a real private member's bill.

Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

How's water supply in Syria nowadays? Shortages contributed to the civil war, as they did in Yemen.

What's water shortage going to do to Iran?

The structure of BBC management needs some attention, by people who know what they're doing, not just "an outsider who knows how to turn organisations around".

The director generalship is a huge job - editor-in-chief and operation of a £6bn organisation. Maybe just split those roles.

I agree with @arusbridger.bsky.social about BBC governance. Although v hesitant about another rearrangement, the single corporate-style board is massively flawed, not least because there needs to be some distance for the governors/board members from editorial decisions
Michael Prescott and Sir Robbie Gibb both bailed out of journalism years ago, and enjoy lucrative careers in corporate PR. And now they are the arbiters of BBC editorial standards. Go figure www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/media/...

The BBC...

Charles Moore: a gigantic self-satisfied bureaucracy

Dorothy Byrne: makes stupid, basic mistakes and is hopeless at PR

David Yelland: It was a coup

Me: I see a self-flagellating organisation. It is self-satisified sometimes, refusing to accept minor criticisms

David Elstein (ex-BBC, ex-ITV, lots more) on BBC News: BBC Arabic works to the Foreign Office, not the BBC Board.

I think that's overstating it, but the FCDO certainly does control some of the budget, and takes an interest in its operation.

Newsreader tries to ignore the Arabic story, move on.

Headline from a serious and long working paper on the economic impact of Brexit. Possible that this has been feeding into OBR and HMT discussions?

We've heard several times this morning that the US senate has passed a biil to end the government shutdown at least temporarily, and the House of Representatives now has to pass it.

That's the House which has been closed for three months to stop a swearing in and a vote on Epstein stuff.

I'd call the BBC a pro-Trump organisation.

The slightest thing he says tends to be in the headlines, they've hardly ever looked at his criminal charges and anti-constitutional operations, and they've never considered his mental capacity.

This (not from that piece) is one of those charts where I am completely aware of the data but my mental map of how the global economy works still almost refuses to update to the new reality. Because the pace of change has been so rapid.
