Thousands of phantom stingers pierce my skin, leaving no evidence but for the shaking of my hands. I flip the wooden sign on the front door to “Closed,” sighing as the cold winter daylight streams in through the glass panes. It reflects little white squares on the knobby wooden floor. Funny. Kinda makes me want to play hopscotch. As if I could. I heave a deep sigh, glancing around my apothecary. Dust motes swirl in circular ballets, bouncing off each other in fireworks of throat-scratching particles. How poetic. Limping, I hobble over to my counter, where piles of the most common herbs lay, untouched. I’m fucked.
