Boilermaker, Tigers fan, unabashed nerd. Trying to slide over here from the old place.
Helluva day for none of the three main Guestumentaries to be available on streaming...

Bill LaJoie left the Tigers in January 1991, basically fed up with Schembechler/Campbell and the general stinginess of the organization.

I did not remember Dmitri Young being drafted by the Devil Rays in the expansion draft from the Reds, then immediately being the PTBNL in a trade back to the Reds from a trade the week before. Seems... fishy.

3 more years of this shit, folks. If we are lucky two of them will have some small guardrails.

I (gasp) discovered an error on Baseball Reference that has propagated to other places. I have contacted them with links from the NYT at the time.

They have Joe McDonald listed as the Tigers GM in 92. It was Jerry Walker, who was hired after the 91 season. McDonald was the interim in 91.

I spy Phil Bickford in the transactions log on a minor league deal.

The only thing that could rival what Indiana did would have been if the 06 Tigers finished the job.

Iu should have gone for that.

Remember that play when the 4th down conservative types say to punt on 4th and 1 deep in your own territory.

Not many isotropic structures engineers in these parts to get this one...
I hope this gets ratioed.

Getting caught up on Phantom Island and had some feedback on the special venue episode. You guys seemed quick to assume MLB shooting for red states/related audiences. Probably something to that, but two exceptions stood out.

Minnesota only had 20 seconds on the shot clock for a full possession after a defensive rebound at Illinois and nobody caught it. They drained a 3 at the fake buzzer, to go full "ball don't lie."

Good thread
Here we go again. "We need a salary cap because then we'll finally have the competitive balance that other leagues have but is missing in MLB." Updated these numbers...

Matt Painter erasure...
We asked over 100 people in sports which leaders they most admire.

For this list, leaders had to be an active coach, player or executive in 2025.

Revenue sharing status is a bit opaque, but the Tigers seem likely to be borderline given that they only started receiving around 2019.

Maybe there is something of a "Producers" effect to ensure a Comp A pick for Skubal (and Mize) next year, and unpopular offseason is their "Springtime for Hitler."

@tiger337.bsky.social the guest on this should be your friend. Sabermetric biostatistician in Boston.

The Dodgers draft next year includes their 1st round pick moved back 10 spots and forfeited their 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th picks.
January 16, 2026 at 11:38 AM
My prediction is by the time 2031 rolls around, Tigers fans will be relieved that they didn't re-sign Skubal at any cost.
January 15, 2026 at 5:51 PM
How flagrant he is at over-reacting to non offenses, I am surprised Paul Szelc hasn't joined ICE.

You can tell a bracketologist is full of it if they have BYU in a Sunday region.

Are college basketball announcers more freelancy this year, or is it just me? Seems like there are announcers that are bouncing around between several networks.
January 12, 2026 at 1:02 AM
One could argue the low filing number the Tigers filed is actually a case of *not* being cheap because it increases the chances of losing the case, thus showing a higher willingness to pay Skubal 30M+.
January 11, 2026 at 6:27 PM
There's no need to freak out over the Skubal arbitration gap. You have an unprecedented player and his team in a system that relies on precedent both shooting the moon. It's fascinating, not some sign of cheapness.
