“The community depends on the forest. In the past, we were spoilt by nature. Everything we needed was here.”

Our latest report exposes deforestation damaging the livelihoods of local & Indigenous communities in Borneo, who rely on the forest for food, livelihoods, and medicine.

🚨 NEW joint statement: EU’s credibility on human rights & climate is on the line.

Ahead of a vote in November that could weaken the #CSDDD, 140+ CSOs urge MEPs to back a strong, fair deal that protects communities & our planet, not corporate interests.

🌳 Borneo’s forests are home to wildlife found nowhere else — orangutans, proboscis monkeys & dozens of unique birds.

Our Risky Business report reveals how timber from bulldozed forests in Indonesia is connected to the supply chains of EU companies importing plywood, decking, and door frames.

FSC members MUST reject Motion 45 at this week’s General Assembly, which would remove a strict limit on the amount of Intact Forest Landscapes that FSC-certified firms can degrade through logging.

🚨 Brussels is backtracking - again!

@ec.europa.eu seeks another delay to the #EUDR, and every second means more forest lost to satisfy European consumption.

The EU Parliament & Council MUST reject this proposal and implement the law by the end of 2025.

Meanwhile the #EUDR – which can rid EU supply chains of dirty soy – is under threat once again

EU policymakers should be focused on implementing the law, not picking it to pieces at the demand of industry lobbyists

Secret Ingredient: A year of inaction⚠️

In September 2024, our investigation linked soy used in feed for chicken sold by McDonald’s and Europe’s leading supermarkets to deforestation, land grabbing, corruption and rights abuses in Brazil’s Cerrado.

So, what's happened since?
September 22, 2025 at 8:05 AM
⚠️ But progress is unsteady and the Cerrado's future is far from guaranteed.

Last year, it lost more land to deforestation than any other biome in Brazil.

Our upcoming analysis will show agribusiness continues to drive the destruction - watch this space! 👀

“Women who defend land rights and natural resources against mega-projects face greater risks and are among the most at-risk human rights defenders globally.”

Their rights must be protected, and corporations must be held accountable.

What a way to start the week – we’ve just received a copy in the post of @nytimes.com featuring our investigation on the front page!

Despite high-profile coverage exposing how its demand for wood is fueling the destruction of Borneo’s rainforests, the US RV industry remains silent. 🤐

🌲🚐 Our new investigation reveals how America’s RVs are driving rainforest destruction in Indonesia.

🪵500 rainforest trees destroyed every day.
🦧Orangutan habitat bulldozed.

This is what "sustainability" looks like in the RV industry 👇

A love of nature and the great outdoors is the #1 reason Americans give for buying RVs.

But many of these vehicles are linked to the destruction of vast swathes of rainforest and orangutan habitat.

Apyterewa is the most heavily deforested Indigenous land in the Brazilian Amazon, with an area larger than New York City cleared in recent years.

We've exposed the companies connected to cattle raised there illegally, including suppliers to luxury EU brands. 🔗 www.earthsight.org.uk/news/hidden-...

Illegal cattle ranching is a threat to the world’s forests.

Laws like the EU Deforestation Regulation can help ensure European consumption stops driving the destruction.

Policymakers must stand firm and implement the #EUDR as planned. ✊

What is the real cost of a luxury handbag? 👜

🌳 Illegal deforestation

🪓 Invasions of Indigenous land

Our latest investigation traces leather from cattle raised on illegally cleared Amazon land through tanneries in Brazil and Italy, to high-end handbags sold by Coach.

With major forests like the #Amazon at risk of reaching a tipping point, urgent action is needed to tackle #deforestation in global supply chains.

🌎 On #EarthDay, we're calling on the UK government to fulfill its 2021 promise to ban commodities produced on illegally deforested land.

The delay has already cost forests worldwide.

In 2024 alone, over $2.1 billion of Russian birch plywood was imported to the US.

Russian timber now represents more than 50% of all US-bound Russian shipments.

It’s one of the few major trade flows untouched by US sanctions.

Last year, Better Cotton found itself at the centre of the scandal.

Since then, it’s failed to acknowledge the land grabbing that underpins agricultural expansion in Brazil. This has left traditional communities and the Cerrado at the mercy of greedy agribusinesses.
April 11, 2025 at 8:20 AM
Even though deforestation rates in the Cerrado reduced by a quarter from 2023 to 2024, the expansion of cotton remains a threat.

Since Fashion Crimes, Brazil has overtaken the US as the world’s largest exporter of cotton – a position that could cost the biome its future.
