Somebody asked me if I could go back and start again with a different brain, would I. Years ago I thought yes, I would, and now I know I wouldn’t. Because whatever challenges I had in school, I guess they forced me to where I am today. So I now see them as an asset

Blends and Digraphs

A lot of parents may have forgotten what blends and digraphs are, I know I had until I started helping my daughter to read!

They thought I was lazy, so they put me in the slow class. But my mom was a Head Start teacher, and she told me, ‘You’re not slow, you’re just different.'

Open Syllables

Open syllables have just one vowel and it’s at the end of the syllable and it says its own name (they are long vowels).

I think if you can show a kid that reading can actually be fun, it can make you laugh, inspire imagination - that can make a huge difference.

If the vowel after the /k/ sound is an e or i, the use a k but if it’s a - u, o or a - then spell it with a C.

(Words like kangaroo and koala are derived from Australian aboriginal languages and so don’t follow this English spelling rule.)

If your child can’t remember if a word should be spelled with a C or a K if it starts with /k/ sound - here’s a cute way to help them remember:

Keep the kitten and cuddle with the cozy cat

It's because if there is a consonant before the /ch/ sound, we spell it with ch. But, if there is a short vowel right before the /ch/, we spell it as tch.

Consonant before the /ch/ --> spell as ch

Short vowel before the /ch/ --> spell as tch

Words that end in ch and tch
In one syllable words like patch, fetch, crunch and grinch, the tch and ch at the end of the words sound the same, like /ch/.

Why do we spell them differently?

One way to help your child learn sight words is to write the words on an index card. Then have them draw a picture to help remember the word. Then start practicing reading the words on their cards, eventually they can cover up the picture and read them without looking. #dyslexia #dyslexiatutor

These are units, sometimes called glued sounds. They are groups of 3 letters that are pronounced a little differently than expected. They are used at the ends of words. In the Barton Reading and Spelling System they are introduced in Level 3.
