I trust my immune system to fight viruses in the same way I trust my Charmander to fight a Mewtwo - it can, but I gotta train it up first with some random encounters.

(and then like one encore movie that just is a straightforward no frills murder mystery cos that would be the subversion at that point)

There is a lot more to love in this one too, but the theming is what really sticks with me. I really want to see it again, just to marinate in it a little more.

9/10 great work @rianjohnson.bsky.social and team, I'm so glad we got three of these and I want like four more, all equally weird.

Also, the movie is shot fantastically and the lighting is great too. I wish this had come out on Halloween - I get that the tradition is Thanksgiving cos of the first one, but come on

This thing woulda ripped so hard on halloween. It has a jumpscare in it!

So, it's better to lie at the end, let the Jewel stay a mystery, and help everyone in the community let go of the past a bit.

The dynamic between Benoit and his sidekicks is a great part of these movies, and I really like that it changes every time because we get to see a new side to him.

And, at the end during the normal "detective victory speech", Benoit finally realizes it too.

Sure, he could reveal that The Secretary Did It and get the glory, but then what? The gem is discovered and goes to its "rightful" heir, a scumbag that we know just wants power (because he told us!).

Josh and Daniel. I like the small rivalry that's set up where first, Jud gets sucked into "the game" of solving the case with Benoit.

But after that telephone call (that Benoit tries to hurry along!) he realizes that solving the murder is just less important than making sure the community survives.

He is so rotten and soulless that he doesn't hide it and doesn't think it's wrong.

The whole "I tried everything to connect with voters" bit is a great joke, but it's also great setup to show that yeah, he doesn't lie because he doesn't care to.

Those two are fantastic. And so are...

Josh Brolin is totally believable as the fire and brimstone shithead preacher. Daryl McCormack is great as his son too.

I love the dynamic - the father is cynical, hypocritical, only there for the hidden treasure BUT able to conceal that from his flock.

The son is after the money too, but he...

Glenn Close is incredible, and I love that she only reached peace at the very end when she finally sees Grace as what she is - a poor girl stuck in a shitty situation.

I love that "poor girl" repeats throughout the movie, making it clear that Grace is the victim this mystery revolves around.

Prentice Wicks:
- hated his own daughter, and forced her to stay in a community that also hated her
- kept her there by promising her his vast wealth
- killed himself by eating the jewel, also breaking his promise
- burdened a very impressionable child with keeping his secret

This film is very interested in stories, religion, and grace. It's using the mystery format to talk about why people do bad things, and why people want justice.

Also the real killer is Prentice Wicks, and I can't wait to rewatch it with this in mind.

First off: I think this is a movie that a lot of people won't like, same as Glass Onion. It is messy, and weird, and twisty. But that is the kind of thing I like, and there is a lot to love and some great characters to pick at.

It's wild what someone can think is funny when everyone around them is monetarily incentivized to stay on their good side

I am 100% sure he's done this and I am 100% sure the target found it insanely creepy but also felt intense pressure not to tell him that directly

I left TLJ super pumped for the next movie. I left RoS absolutely sure I'd never bother with another Star Wars film

Hard agree, Rogue One was mid and The Last Jedi was interesting.

Now I want to get into design systems, because it scratches the lego part of my brain and it feels a little bit like game design as well. Also it's more niche, and that feels good for job security.

So I pivoted to UX immediately, and my school team needed it anyway. My first job was in games, but it paid bad and had no benefits. I pivoted to general tech to cast a wider net and I've wound up doing a lot of healthcare tech by chance.

I wanted to do concept art for a living. I was struggling. I got two pieces of advice.
- from my dad: some careers are just hard because there's not enough jobs to go around. It's not you, it's the market.
- from a GDC talk: there was a big UX shortage in games at the time
