I also feel like Sirois just never got his foot work up to standard. He often tried to play the roll of sweeper/keeper, but regularly found himself out of position and compromised as a result. You could see he was working on it, but it just never consistently came together for him.

Because hockey fans don’t care about “growth”. Most seem to agree that the sport is worse than it’s ever been because of “growth”. Highly diluted talent pool due to too many teams. Salary cap system that punishes big clubs. Finger on the scale to help markets like Vegas and Florida, etc.

Wall Street beat us to it. Opus 4.6 = software companies are worthless now. Sell all your stock. Opus 4.6 can just write the equivalent of Microsoft Dynamics whenever you need a CRM or ERP. No need to buy software ever again.

Sure, but what is Nvidia going to say? "We've decimated the market for several key components into order to sell high margin data centre GPUs to hyper-scalers, at least of half of which are simply going into storage as there is insufficient rack space or power for them? Sorry about that."

Perhaps. On the other hand, having this deal scuttled as part of the CUSMA negotiations wouldn't be surprising.

Outlets keep talking about Chinese EVs coming here to Canada but seem to be omitting / forgetting / not noticing that the United States has effectively threatened us with economic annihilation if it happens.

Canadians shouldn't be choosing their BYD Dolphin trim levels quite yet.

Big claim for a company that also bleeds money and needs constant capital infusions just to keep the lights on.

It's almost like the key to EV adoption is infrastructure, even in the coldest climates. Availability of chargers = easier adoption.

This. `sudo curl | bash` just downloads something with authority and then runs it without any. Essentially safe for everything but your home folder.

My coder was beside himself with indignation. He didn't even know how to answer.

I had to calmly explain that I would be inclined to value 5 minutes of coding that the developer spent 8 hours planning over 8 hours of mindless keyboard slapping any day.

That manager was fired shortly thereafter.
January 30, 2026 at 8:09 AM
On the other side of that coin, I once sat in a meeting with a "technology manager" who looked one of my coders straight in his eyes and explained that "No, thinking about how to write code isn't work. You are only working when you are at your computer actually writing code."

As a former Torontonian living in Montreal now for many years: Doug isn't wrong, but he should still keep his opinions to himself on this issue.

The sad thing is, there are going to be a lot of suffering kids.

The adults? FAFO. But these children; they don't deserve this. Negligence on behalf of their parents, plain and simple.
January 28, 2026 at 1:57 AM
We constantly cut education funding, creating a world where children can't afford university, to move out of their parents' homes, or to build their own lives. Then, somehow we're surprised when a politician with nothing to offer other than squealing "Canada is broken!" appeals to them.

Even OpenAI knows this is a bit of a stretch...

Unlikely. But seeing them want to come their own independent nation, at least the way things are going, is much less far fetched. The “Calexit” movement is less organized, but according to polls, has far more public support than Alberta separation does.

It (Winamp) really whipped the llama's ass, though.
