This is being demonstrated in the U.S. right now. To get their votes, the administration panders to the worst instincts of people who are struggling, then slashes their healthcare and other forms of assistance. The worse they make their supporters' lives, the more votes they get. It's perverse.

This is the story of America. We can't have anything nice because we've taken every single bit of our unimaginable prosperity and shoveled it into the pockets of a tiny number of people who would just as soon see the rest of us dead.
