Something I really hate about the US-centric "anime is mainstream now" narrative is how local media outlets are uncritically picking it up, I've seen several headlines like that following Kimetsu no Yaiba's box office success, as if the 40something years of anime history in Italy never existed

Here in Italy, everything animated was just "cartoni animati", no matter their country of origins, and anime was aired alongside western animation all the time
this didn't really happen in other countries bc well...all animation was exported anyways, so it was like all cartoons! not trying to infodump, i just think the difference in soft power here is interesting to talk about lol

I am just saying that, if HBO's Spawn came out last year, you would have guys, including producers, calling it the Spawn "anime"
And looking at it now, it is, in fact, not a coincidence that USA streaming services started twisting what an "anime" was when they started producing animation geared towards an adult audience that aped what the general USA public thought "anime" was, like the Tomb Raider and Devil May Cry shows
like anime was always aimed at mainstream audiences even in japan, it never was otaku exclusive, the reason the USA mostly got otaku aimed things first was a result of them trying to pass the medium as More Adult to compete with local production

sorry if i sound mean to op, but anime was already mainstream outside of the USA, the main change is that it now actively tries to cater more to a USA market due to the latter's dominance in streaming and the like
It's extremely depressing that anime went from a more obscure medium to front and center mainstream during my lifetime, but this translated to the medium transitioning from "for fans by fans" to pure exploitative capitalism with us as the captive audience

Ok, after seeing the trailer, admittedly, if Tangle and Whisper were adapted to the games having unexplained comic book effects it'd kinda fuck
