Since more and more people are giving FFXI a shot, I thought this might come in handy because so many options like this are hidden in the menus!
For those like me who don't want to unequip their linkpearls/turn all player chats off.
A screenshot from Final Fantasy XI of an important NPC conversation with the player character, but the chatbox is being taken up by external conversations. Instructions for changing chat channels for NPC dialogue! 1. Open the menu and go to the second tab, opening 'Config'. 2. Selecting the 'Log' option. 3. Select the window you want to change settings for. 4. Select 'Chat' to open your specific chat log displays in the window you chose in the previous step. (Controller only option!) You don't need to return to this menu to change which window you're adjusting settings for., you can use your arrow buttons. All cutscene dialogue/mid-combat dialogue (if there is any) will now be in whichever window you turn the 'NPC conversations' setting on in! This can be adjusted for almost anything in your chat log! I personally like setting 'combat/NPC story stuff' in Window 2 (on top) while all player conversation is in Window 1 (on bottom). There you are! Uninterrupted (well kinda) cutscene dialogue!
