Me: why am I being assigned so many 1600 elo opponents?
Also me: oh right, I lost over 200 elo while playing chess from the beach.

Time to focus!

New Zealand just recorded its first-ever day of zero coal- or gas-fired electricity. In fact two days, 20 & 21 December. (Still some co-gen, about 1.8%.)

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

Every time I talk to folks about why I went with an e-GMP based vehicle and expressly mention V2L at the top of my list the answer often is 'when will you need that' and the reply, increasingly as carmakers retreat on EVs exacerbating climate catastrophes is 'more than you'd think'.
Made it through the first windstorm. Power shut off for 26 hours. Luckily, got the EV to run the fridge in the mean tome. Now have to deal with another planned outage at 5am tomorrow. :P

I'll take you up on that.

The simple reason Matthew Yglesias is wrong about the politics of clean energy. 🧵
I’d much rather see haters argue with my oil & gas take — this is a real and important disagreement where I am very aware that my view is not widely shared by the relevant stakeholders.

The regenerative movement thinks the eco-tragedy of agriculture is the intensification of nice pastoral farms into evil industrial farms. No! It’s the transformation of nature into pastoral farms. That’s when we lost most of the carbon and biodiversity.

What a wasted opportunity. All they had to do was add the EREV option for those who need it and frame the Lightning as the best EV truck ever made. Then iterate until gas is no longer “needed”.

Incredible.

> Each Eavor loop involves drilling four to five km down, which then spawn up to 12 pairs of laterals of three to four km, for a total of 90km. The Geretsried project required four loops, or a total of up to 360km of drilling.

Imagine showing a petrol engine to someone who had only known electric vehicles, and trying to convince them to switch to petrol. No-one would choose the dirty, noisy, less efficient, more expensive vehicle. This isn't 1910, hostage to gender insecurity. We can just choose the better tech.
