A 1950 Good Housekeeping article, “Your Child’s Camp and Polio,” advises parents agonizing over whether to send children away for the summer. “[I]f there should be another polio epidemic this year,” it asks readers, “will your child be safer in camp? or in greater danger?” www.hnn.us/article/good...
When Good Housekeeping Meant Getting Vaccinated Against Polio
The pages of 1950s lifestyle magazines offer a glimpse of a time when childhood vaccines were anything but controversial.

Before the embassy was seized, demands for student deportation targeted rioters. But the White House was soon inundated with letters from elected officials, as well members of the public, demanding deportation as retaliation against all Iranians studying in the U.S. www.hnn.us/article/indi...
Indifferent to the Fate of Freedom Elsewhere
Jimmy Carter is known for his defense of human rights worldwide. But in 1979, he threatened to deport thousands of Iranian student protesters.

In January of 2020, while I was researching at the Carter Library, I found this while looking for something else. It wasn't part of my research, but I snapped a quick picture and moved on. Today, though, in the light of both history and the present moment, it seems to carry much more weight.

Anyone have book recommendations on 9/11 and how it impacted American culture or pop culture? Something I could assign an intro US2 course. #History

"Trump spoke to his coalition’s fears. He successfully masked policies that will harm his voters with a negative brand of identity politics. He won’t solve actual problems, but he will validate grievances." -- @itsafronomics.bsky.social
Trump ran on identity politics and won
He united voters around shared grievances, not plans to solve their problems.

Preparing for a primary source discussion in my US2 class. Re-reading Gloria Steinem's "Equal Rights for Women -- Yes and No" and Shirley Chisholm's "I'd Rather be Black than Female" hit kind of hard given where we are today. Jimmy Carter's "Crisis of Confidence" speech is also uncannily relevant.

“Don’t obey in advance,” I mutter to myself as I lie down, leaving 2/3 of my pillow unused for when my cat decides to come to bed.
