One of the glorious things of living in paradise at the literal end of the world (Onetahua/Farewell Spit, te Waipounamu/Sth Island of Aotearoa New Zealand) is that cetaceans come here a lot - including to strand, unfortunately. Last week, we had two orca teaching their young to hunt stingrays! 🐳
"When you adjust for per capita voting intention, the regulatory standards bill might be the most successful piece of legislation. It's been described as a “cockroach”, and the comparison seems apt given it’s an almost unkillable beast that seems to feed on hatred" thespinoff.co.nz/politics/28-...
Underdog tale: the regulatory standards bill is law despite almost everyone hating it
From one perspective it’s troubling for our democracy. From another, it’s inspiring for all of us who persist in spite of the revulsion we engender in allies and opponents alike.

Clean car standard tinkering incoherent: "More dirty cars, more roads, more congestion, more accidents, more air pollution, more healthcare costs, more emissions. A vicious spiral of unintended consequences resulting from incoherent policy & short-term focus on growth" newsroom.co.nz/2025/11/28/c...
Clean car standard tinkering an incoherent misstep
Opinion: The evisceration of the clean car standard is the latest move in a hollowing out of our climate policy architecture.

One of our worst marine microplastic pollutants & no one cares 🛻 I worked on tyre stewardship policy in 2004 and we haven't moved one iota close to solving this massive problem: www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
Marine researchers find biggest source of microplastics in our ocean is vehicle tyres
It was found broken down tyres were the largest source of microplastics in New Zealand's coastal waters.

Energy systems are at the heart of climate change, technology, and the future of how we live, but they’re far more complex than most people realise.

This is a great explainer video by @chrisjardineenergy.bsky.social that helps to make sense of the energy system.

I don't see how Tesla's Model 3 can survive if Benz can offer an alternative EV this cheap, with this kind of performance, on top of the 15% tariff that it's charged in the US.

Imagine what this model does to Tesla in Europe, where Benz pays no tariffs.

"For coral, sustained heat stress is measured using degree heating weeks (DHW). At 4 DHW, coral bleaching is likely....At Ningaloo Reef last summer, more than 20 DHW were recorded."

We knew Ningaloo’s coral bleaching was severe. But what we found 6 months later was still a shock
Mounting evidence shows the state of coral reefs is worsening despite concerted local conservation. The answer is public pressure for meaningful climate action.

President Trump gave the Afghan shooter (assassin?) of the the two National Guard soldiers asylum in 2025.

Clarification: It was NOT an illegal immigrant.

How we beat back the corporate takeover of America:

1. Break up corporate monopolies

2. Continue building union power

3. End Citizens United and get big money out of politics

Let’s keep working to unrig the system.
