The Florida Panhandle and central Peninsula area received beneficial rains this week. This erased an area of exceptional drought and improved severe and extreme drought. (1/2)

USDM Hot Topic December 11, 2025: Florida. Coverage of abnormal dryness or drought rose from 85.64% to 85.8%, and moderate drought or worse increased from 62.93% to 65.96%. However, severe drought or worse decreased from 37.61% to 26.77%. Extreme drought or worse fell from 20.54% to 5.77%. Exceptional drought disappeared after covering 5.61% of the state last week.

Drought expanded and intensified across the Hawaiian Islands after another week of below-normal rainfall and streamflow levels. The dryness has caused fire activity to increase this fall.

USDM Hot Topic December 4, 2025: Hawaii. Hawaii is now completely in abnormal dryness or drought, up from 99.26% last week. Moderate drought or worse increased from 67.87% to 86.84%. Severe drought or worse rose from 22.27% to 32.98%. Extreme drought remained at 5.5% of the state. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index rose from 195 to 225 of 500.

Researchers from the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the NDMC just launched TerraDrought, the first global system for monitoring and forecasting drought and its impacts.

US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from November 25 to November 18. Parts of the West had mostly improvements, although there were some degradations on the eastern side of the region. The Northeast also saw some improvements, with a few minor areas of degradation. The High Plains, South and Midwest saw mixed conditions. The Southeast saw some degradations, with a few small areas of improvement. Puerto Rico also saw an area of degradation.
