Might as well hit all of my socials! I can't wait for going viral. My band released our second full-length album Phlebotomy for the Faint of Heart today. Think the Edmund Fitzgerald (the ship, not the song) meets Blood on the Tracks. Or something.

A few friends around Kalamazoo College know that my pie-in-the-sky, passion project is an interdisciplinary Senior Seminar titled "Dinosaurs in Culture." Something like this would be an option as a textbook. So cool!

(this class is probably never happening, but still!)
"Palaeontology in Public: Popular Science, Lost Creatures and Deep Time" is out today, and is freely downloadable as an open access pdf, published by @uclpress.bsky.social !

Two things about the altered Nekima Levy Armstrong photo:

1. It's social and political meaning is 100% as horrible as everyone is saying.

2. I know tons of "independents" and "moderates" will insist it's no big deal.

The last part is as dangerous as those who delight in it ghoulishly.

I added the Stylus add-on to Firefox and am now fascinated with experimenting with CSS options on the fly.

Sometimes you have to stop agonizing over the nuances of word choice and tone and just send the damn email. However, you sometimes have to make an unnecessary Bluesky post first.

This is exactly right. The idea that this violence will only come for people who "deserve" it is vital for Trump supporters. They believe, sometimes correctly, that they will be spared because they're the good, law-abiding, proper keepers of United States membership.
The regime’s propaganda machine hard at work reminding their audience that they are supposed to hate and fear *those* people, that violence committed by the state against them is good and necessary - that their lives don’t matter, as they are the “Other” that must be subjugated and punished.
Jesse Watters highlights that Renee Nicole Good, the woman killed by ICE, had "pronouns in her bio" and "leaves behind a lesbian partner and a child from a previous marriage"

I know it's cool on Bluesky to be dismissive of anyone using an LLM as ignorant or worse, but I'm reminded how casually and widely people are using them as part of their daily life. Just happened to me at the barbershop with the barber and his customer, both regular users of GenAI in various ways.

All the power and coding of Microsoft, and I'm fascinated by what its products CAN'T do. Easily take Attendance in a Teams class? Good luck! Loading all members of a Team into the Scheduling Assistant should be one button. Not there. Can Copilot find an available time for everyone to meet? Nope.

You cannot pick up the pass interference call against Minnesota then call that pass interference against MSU. It isn't either call, it's the inconsistenty.

Attending a conference about AI and the Liberal Arts while refreshing Bluesky is a deeply dissonant experience, but I'm okay with that. Almost enjoy it? Welcome to modern life and "Meta-prompting for Metacognition."

I should expect nothing less, but the fact that all the .gov accounts that joined Bluesky immediately started trolling to own the libs is wild.

General observation: "imbricated" is definitely a word, and it is catching on with academics. I don't know that I'd ever heard it before, and now it's been twice in two days. Imbricated is not just for roof tiles anymore!

Do people still live post through conferences? Is that a thing? Did the end of the hashtag on BlueSky kill the practice?

I was reading a Reel by someone who considers themselves an advocate and experimenter of new tech, including AI music. They seemed quite shaken and nervous about Sora. When people who otherwise are excited evangelists get nervous, I take extra caution and notice.

Remember when your GOP-loving friends, family, and acquaintances would complain about how "divisive" Obama was?
Trump to generals: "America is under invasion from within. We're under invasion from within. No different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in any ways because they don't wear uniforms. At least when they're wearing a uniform you can take them out."

Hey, if you want to win, you're gonna need to do a little war crime. Kill civilians first, ask for forgiveness (or don't) later.

Wow.
Hegseth: "A blemish-free record is what peacetime leaders covet the most, which is the worst of all incentives."

So much near-parody from Hegseth today. Had to laugh at the "no hot yoga or stretching" part. Considering yoga and stretching can be excellent for overall fitness (anyone heard of Tom Brady?), it's proof what a performatively sexist display this is. Yoga is clearly too effeminate for a warrior.

I'm reminded that many people who support Trump's intervention in Portland are less concerned about the consequences of domestic deployment of the military, actual crime rates, or Constitutionality, and more guided by "these people piss me off and Trump is going to show them who's boss."

I am at the center of organizing an event next week, and I feel like I have benefited directly from watching Miles Teller in the The Offer over the summer. Haven't had to deal with any mobsters, but the delicate balances, precarious timetables, and uncertain communications resonate with me.

I read the Newsweek article this morning that was essentially, "Trump is obviously fine. He said so on Truth Social." Wow, insightful stuff. Thanks, I feel so informed.

If you say 'heteronormative' or 'unhoused person' or 'food insecurity' you're basically talking gibberish and nobody can understand you but if you say you can see inflammation in children at the airport and that vaccines lower IQ or that germs are a myth you get to fire all the scientists.

The Leaders and the Best.

One of MSU fans' complaints about UM was not just their actions, but the righteous indignation about their athletic department being better than everyone else and exemplars of high standards of conduct.
The NCAA: "Harbaugh ran a program that was largely dismissive of rules compliance. There was little, if any, emphasis on following the rules."
