Lake whitefish are spawning this time of year, so commercial season is closed. The eggs will overwinter and then hatch early in the spring.

This is a lot of "warm" water for November 18. Lots of potential for lake effect snow if it can get cold enough. Lots of cooling needed before ice can form. #GreatLakes

"Underwater Specialist" matches your preferences but they just wanted to hire a fish!

Manitowoc-build Konecrane #70 for working on nuclear submarines is leaving town. Heading to Tacoma, WA via St Lawrence Seaway, Atlantic coast, Panama Canal, and Pacific coast.

So long #70. It's been fun watching you grow up.

Combining the life cycle theme for #sundayfishsketch h with #GarWeek for a quick ink sketch of the Alligator Gar life cycle. Eggs -> larval -> juvenile -> adult -> back to eggs!

Don't eat those eggs!

As a #GreatLakes wetland resident species, it is always fun to find them min the nets along with the #GarWeek gars, juvenile fishes (perch, sunfish, bass, etc), and northern pike.

Another #GarWeek spotlight species is the Bowfin. Check out this young of the year bowfin from a Green Bay coastal wetland. #GreatLakes

The #GreatLakes lake sturgeon population is currently around 1% of historic levels. Restoring those populations takes time and stocking fish is an important part of the work. Streamside rearing trailers (like mini fish hatcheries) grow fish in their first year to be released.

Today #GarWeek is visiting some other species. Here are some pictures of spawning Lake Sturgeon in the Wolf River. Wisconsin is home to the largest lake sturgeon population in the world in the Lake Winnebago system, largely because of early protection of the species here.

For #GarWeek, here is a juvenile gar from southern Green Bay that we encountered this summer. Look that those pectoral fins go! After length measurement, this fish was released on site. #GreatLakes

Some lakes are clear for the right reasons. Spent last week in Sylvania Wilderness exploring remote, forested lakes. Picture of my canoe sporting a larval whitefish sticker I got at a showing of @alltooclearfilm.bsky.social!

No problem!

And here's a picture of a small common carp from Lake Michigan. (Proof of my "expertise")

Spooky theme of #SundayFishSketch is the marbled stargazer. A nightmare fish buried in the sand and waiting to ambush its prey. www.discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts...

For the Opah #SundayFishSketch, I was REALLY lazy! The Opah is a hot fish and this is a heat map showing that heat.

Arctic Char was an easy choice for the #Arctic theme of #SundayFishSketch. Other local options would have been the northern pike or lake trout!
