This #biocrust research www.frontiersin.org/journals/mic... assessed carbon exhange, an important functional role of biocrusts in the global #carbon cycle. I loved the images that illustrate succession, and was fascinated that the intermediate cyanolichen type exhibited the strongest C fixation.

From the archives! Charles Keeling on "Rewards and Penalties of Monitoring the Earth". scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/assets/publi... . A good read for research students and supervisors, covering personal and political challenges for pursuit and application of #science for enhancing human life and prosperity.

I made a guard to protect the @openacousticdevices.info #audiomoth membrane... Last time the audio recorders were out on peak district moors the membranes were damaged, maybe pecked by birds, resulting in damage to the devices.

#soil surface #biocrust #microbial ecology remote-sensing etc. researchers please consider submitting to @FrontMicrobiol special issue- Biological Soil Crusts: Spatio-temporal Dev. & Ecological Functions of Soil Surface Microbial Communities across Scales https://t.co/vF293X2KAu

Nice! I tried "hot composting" this year and it worked great. Worth the effort to save the planet and also save money too. Give it a try. #microbiology in action! Resources that helped me: https://t.co/kc5JRQzDwu + https://t.co/NawUzAG19e https://t.co/fkiiONifAY

Out of my comfort zone doing plant surveys this week for long-term ecology research at @derbyuniesrc Cuckoo Tors Buxton. @NutNetGlobal #DragNet. Grateful to have excellent #biology #zoology students and @Steve_Hoon sharing their knowledge and helping out...

It was a pleasure opening the online debate with Spanish students @unicomplutense about "Should we put #microorganisms on the #conservation agenda?" - In English via Innovation in Teaching project from UCM. Look forward to the next events, hearing more opinions from the students.

European map of topsoil organic carbon - see how important are the peatlands of UK + Ireland for #carbon storage. Of course they are special apart from carbon too #biodiversity #soil https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/science-update/european-map-topsoil-organic-carbon #WorldSoilDay2020

Soil-surface #microbiome is poorly understood yet we know it impacts many important processes. We show fundamental differences in relation to plant cover in #Botswana #Kalahari, and implications for shrub encroachment. Free access for limited time: https://t.co/4eMcCHZife

Today on 2 wheels getting out a bit further in my work from home #wfh commute. Did I stop because the trail was too tough or because trail side #biodiversity caught my eye?
April 16, 2025 at 7:20 AM
#wfh saves me 2h+ commuting each day. I use some of this for personal wellbeing like exercise. This week encouraged to do a bit more in support of @macmillancancer , part of our Env Sciences @DerbyUni response to #cancer diagnosis of people close to us. https://www.justgiving.com/team/envsci

Using simple #physics for checking torque wrench calibration after stripping a thread in bike forks. Can't ride until fixed which might be tricky/costly... Confirmed one wrench was wrong causing me to over-tighten pinch bolt. Other wrench spot-on.

Listening to Rob Mackenzie of @BIFoRUoB as part of @derbyuniesrc Climate Change Action Talks. I find remote conferencing works great and enables me to attend more.

Thanks @abr_eco for advice helping me get more into #acoustic #ecology supporting @derbyuniesrc research and student projects. Here is my #silentcities https://osf.io/h285u/ recording set-up. How will the lockdown impact noise pollution, natural soundscapes + #biodiversity?

Went for 6 mile run today and saw only 1 other human. Fantastic @peakdistrict is a great place to explore #wilderness easily accessible. Tomorrow I welcome visitors to @DerbyUni for our open day #biology #zoology http://derby.ac.uk/biology

We ran a custom wind tunnel in the #Australia outback (Diamantina NP) and worked out which microbes #bacteria blow off the #soil (sand) surface - or not. Implications for landscape stability, dust storms, land management, #biocrust #ecology explored. http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2018JG004932

Off to talk about #soil properties, soil formation, and soil care at the local primary school. I'm bringing an auger and showing this picture from Ainsdale @ECT_UK dunes long-term ecology research site. #biology

Taking the open plan office to a new level in Brisbane. Attacking the backlog and planning future #soil #microbiology @derbyuniesrc research after the @biocrust4 meeting. Good coffee, free WiFi in the city and easy access by boat.

#biocrust in arctic sand dunes reported by @helijuottonen at @biocrust4 . fascinating talk and I look forward to comparing microbial dna sequences from Ainsdale dunes @ECT_UK collected with @DrJonMillett @Ciara_M_Dwyer

I've enjoyed this week cycling to work and exploring Australia whilst hosted by Craig Strong @ANUFennerSchool , developing research and teaching together. Looking forward to @biocrust4 meeting next week at Moreton bay research station in Queensland

amazing research on landscape genomics here at ANU research school of biology. I hope to use these biology and sensor network approaches ( https://www.plantphenomics.org.au ) in our @derbyuniesrc Cuckoo Tors long term ecology project... with #soil #microbiology too obviously. cc @ECT_UK

with @ANUFennerSchool #environmental science students learning about regenerative agriculture as practised by Charlie Maslin @SoilsforLife on his farm in Gunningrah. take home: "shifting mindset from animals to the land".

Thanks @DrJonMillett @Ciara_M_Dwyer for showing me round this fantastic site. Enjoyed getting involved in fieldwork and developing #soil research plans. Looking forward to installing our own dipwells now at @DerbyUni Cuckoo Tors research site. https://x.com/DrJonMillett/status/1150763755078389760

This #frog took up residence in a bucket full of bricks sunk into the front garden as part of a project with the kids. Now stuck with the eyesore for the sake of the frog, seen every day for the last 2 months or so. Amazing how such a little water enhances #habitat in the #garden
