42. Houndmouth - Little Neon Limelight

What a two album run these guys went on. Sadly, the whole thing has fallen apart because of interpersonal issues but we still have this gem. Wish I’d seen them live during this era.

43. Norfolk & Western - The Unsung Colony

Full set of instruments and talented musicians supporting the great and unheralded / unknown Adam Selzer… love the background singer’s contributions too.

44. Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA

An album so packed that my three favorite songs weren’t one of the seven that were released as singles (No Surrender, Downbound Train, Bobby Jean). The album made him so famous it was uncool to like him for 15 years.

But the league has a huge conigent of fans over there

45. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head

Spare me your hate; this is a great album and the band is tight and talented even though their later stuff is not my thing.

sometimes I feel like I don’t have any luck at all. why can’t I get shot by a six-year-old?

46. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes

Petty made hits - each album had 1 or 2 - though didn’t make a perfect album until much later. Nonetheless, this one has 3 all-timers to start side A & Even the Losers on side B. Outtake (Casa Dega) also deserves a listen if haven’t heard it.

47. Guster - Ganging Up On The Sun

Fantastic album from beginning to end. More people should hear it.

For those scoring home that’s a million millions for a white supremacist in the event you wanted a sense of the current state of our moral compass

48. Joe Jackson - Look Sharp!

Masterful debut album by an underrated musical genius with an incredible voice to boot.

49. Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy

Less than 32 minutes long and great end to end. Roland, Lawyers Guns & Money, Accidentally Like a Martyr… probably my LEAST favorite track was a hit (Werewolves of London). My favorite from him, 70s album cover and all.

He was a pitcher, however

50. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

I loved his state albums… and disappointed he never got to Massachusetts. Love his incorporating band instruments.

Think the place I went to medical school at got hacked. Apologies for the r-word.

51. Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride

Their first album in six years and first without Rostam Batmanglij turned out perfect, at least to me.

52. Cracker - Berkeley to Bakersfield

David Lowery’s one of my all time favorites, whether alone or with a band. This album - their most recent as a band - is part of a late career renaissance. Lowery can do punk / post-punk, Eastern European, German, country, folk, & Americana. This has a couple.

53. The Decemberists - The King is Dead

One of two great back to back albums. Singer has a crystal clear voice. Band is tight with good backups and interesting instruments. Relatively well known but insufficiently celebrated in my view.

54. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Tons of good vibes and upbeat energy on this one. Band was pretty good overall in the aughts. Had an all nighter in SF one time with a random group I met at a bar during dinner and accidentally stole the one guys Phoenix CD. Fun memory / never saw them again.

55. Prince - Purple Rain

By and large, I find Prince more widely celebrated posthumously than during his life, although he was a very talented guy. That said, it all came together on this perfect album / soundtrack.

56. Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Their breakthrough first album following an EP and still, for me, their best. Created a whole new sound. Apologies for the NSFW cover if you’re a puritan or in a puritan environment while reading this.

57. REM - Life’s Rich Pageant

In their prime, and when they were indie / alternative icons before mainstream radio, these guys were simply incredible. This album is fantastic from front to back. What a talented group.
