Though Dalamus largely views scars as proof of survival and views them neutral or even positively sometimes, the scars left by his Matron's whip on his neck and face, and the burn scar from his former House's Insignia are reminders of how he "failed" and lost everything.

It's not until Act 3 that Dal really starts to think about the possibility of living on the Surface, with Gloria.

After defeating the Netherbrain, Gloria asks Dalamus, "What will you do now?" Now that the tadpole's gone.

He says, "I want to stay here. With you."
His new home.

He thinks maybe, just maybe, defeating the Absolute will impress Lolth (by destroying a potential rival which lures Her followers away), and grant him the favor to return, but the hope is frail and he's only barely convinced.

His yearning to return slowly becomes dread throughout the game as he realizes his Matron meant for him to die, and death is the likely scenario if he returns. But the realization itself isn't enough to change his belief that--

I should've realized something was amiss when all the art "left out" 2 legs. I thought it was a disguise :'3

The occasional dark joke, like jokingly offering to kill someone who mildly offended her, can get a smile or laugh from her.

Gloria makes Dal smile when they're in private together, talking, or being intimate. When she makes jokes, he smiles even if he doesn't understand, because she smiles.

He shares food and drink with her from his plate or cup--a Drowic thing, like "I've found this food to be safe and I want to share it with you" since poisoning food is not uncommon in Menzoberranzan. She also smiles when he's being soft and gentle, warm and kind, and tries to encourage that.
