Educator. Knowledgeable about Media Literacy Education. Swiftie. Disnerd. Childless Cat Lady. Lifts for Fitness.
But I’m going to Disney World next weekend, which is cool and all but just adds to the cognitive dissonance of this moment.

I’ve spent a lot more time reading books instead of scrolling social media the last few days, and it has worked wonders for my mental health.

And it’s worth noting I teach high school freshmen, and a lot of their worldview is already very heavily influenced by their parents. I live in a red state. I taught these things before the election. It went…okay. I still have a job, so that’s something.

Did I teach them lateral reading? Yes! Did I teach them algorithmic literacy? Yes! How long did I spend on these? About 3 days combined, so not nearly enough. 🫤

Why? Because I’m under pressure to get them to pass the state EOC exam, and the skills tested in this exam don’t line up super well with legitimate media literacy. They have to be good at close reading to pass tests while close reading can be a detriment to media literacy. Look up lateral reading.

Oh, in this particular case, it was because I was awake from like 11pm to 4am and hadn’t slept well in days. Fortunately, I adjusted some meds and slept like a normal human last night. 👍🏼

What’s even more infuriating is that one doctor’s visit that included bloodwork cost me over $400. Amurrica.

Just as a starter, I’ve been sick since Christmas Eve, but waited until today to see the doctor because I hadn’t hit my 2024 deductible and didn’t want to pay towards it knowing it would start back at $0 for 2025.

And so when I am home, I’m watching Disney parks vlogs and scrolling Taylor Swift and teacher memes on insta…which I know I should stop using bc Meta sucks. Maybe I’ll switch to reading books for a while.

I know it’s a privilege to choose to ignore it, but dealing with the fallout of one co-worker dying and another getting fired 2 days later with a very small staff on top of a couple family related stresses has been…a lot.

Navigating work in general with news like that is very hard, but teaching kids who you know will be affected when they do find out is another level.
