SPACESHIP ON VENUS + Ishirō Honda's VARAN THE UNBELIEVABLE at the Paramount opens tomorrow😖 Will have to make due with Italian sword-and-sandal flick THE CENTURION + Danish-Kaiju REPTILICUS—makes my head spin describing it. 1/

Hollywood studios bringing out some big guns to get audiences away from their TV and into theaters. The big, big picture of THIS IS CINERAMA (Paramount), OKLAHOMA (Blue Mouse) in Todd-AO, GIANT (Music Hall), King Vidor's WAR AND PEACE—last day!… 1/

A CHRISTMAS STORY geting a re-release 2 years after its first run on its way to becoming a beloved Christmas flick; much better than the other seasonal offerings: Disney's ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS and SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE w/Dudley Moore. 1/

24 days till Christmas, good time to watch Finney & Guinness in SCROOGE (Blue Mouse). Or, there's William Holden in THE CHRISTMAS TREE (Northgate) supporting Streisand's ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER. 1/

The order of the day is Elizabeth Taylor in literary adaptations: with Brando in REFLECTIONS OF A GOLDEN EYE (The Town), with then-hubby Burton in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (5th Ave). Twice the Lee Marvin, too: THE DIRTY DOZEN (Northgate) and POINT BLANK (Lynn).1/

For a movie that famously wasn't well received, Hitchcock's VERTIGO (Guild 45th) lingers on the same bill as TO CATCH A THIEF. Seems like someone missed a trick by not pairing the former with BELL, BOOK & CANDLE (Varsity) for double the Stewart & Novak… 1/

Day before Thanksgiving and two iconic double-features out: Disney's TREASURE ISLAND + DR SYN (Aurora)—spine tingling suspense!—the other one's playing at the Garden Art Theatre (art here must be some kind of euphemism). 1/

Early happy Thanksgiving courtesy of 1943, meaning holiday matinees. Lena Horne in STORMY WEATHER is screening cinemas around town, including a dubious pairing with CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN (Bagdad). Rochester can be seen in WHAT'S BUZZIN' COUSIN?… 1/

Quite a few gold star 1939 films in cinemas today: MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (Liberty), GOODBYE MR CHIPS (Capitol), THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (Roosevelt), John Ford's DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK (Blue Mouse), ANOTHER THIN MAN (Paramount)… 1/

Gary Cooper's finest role THE WESTERNER (Liberty) is somewhat tempered by the fact he has yet to appear in MEET JOHN DOE, SERGEANT YORK (both 1941), PRIDE OF THE YANKEES (1942), or HIGH NOON (1952); he is also in NORTH WEST MOUNTED POLICE (Paramount). 1/

I could make my own double feature with ANIMAL HOUSE + MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (Aurora Cinema), and give myself tonal whiplash. Four great repertory films at the University Cinema: ROARING 20S, TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, HIGH SOCIETY & AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. 1/

I had no idea that John Huston and Pelé were in a movie together, truly A MINOR MIRACLE. Confession, never seen NIGHT OF THE COMET, would love to have seen it at Valley Drive in w/THE DEAD ZONE; same with THE TERMINATOR at the Coliseum. 1/

Little early for Christmas movies maybe, but looks like Irving Berlin's WHITE CHRISTMAS (Music Hall), in its 4th & final week, won't be around till then. Mickey Spillane's I, THE JURY (Beacon) is a Christmas-set film noir. 1/

Despite some obvious problems, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (Paramount) is a film I love, but today's jewel is Vadim's BLOOD AND ROSES (Coliseum), a film near-impossible to see due to some kind of rights issues; generous to refer to THE DEVIL'S HAND as a "co-hit". 1/

Odd pairing CONFIDENCE GIRL "Larceny in every curve!"+RED PLANET MARS (Capitol). Just rented THE SNIPER (Duwamish, Aurora Drive-ins) from Scarecrow. THE BLACK SWAN (Midway) is one of my favorite swashbucklers. More romantic adventure with IVANHOE (Music Box). 1/

You can mail order advanced tix for MY FAIR LADY, in the meantime I'll happily sit through TOPKAPI (Music Box), then jump over to A SHOT IN THE DARK (Blue Mouse). I have a paperback copy of FAIL SAFE (Coliseum) somewhere around my place. 1/

So much George today—George Raft in RACE STREET (Blue Mouse), THE HOUSE ACROSS THE BAY (Winter Garden); George Brent in GOD'S COUNTRY & THE WOMAN (Broadway) and CHRISTMAS EVE (Roxy) w/George Raft! Never been a huge Danny Kaye fan so… 1/

Have to navigate through the blue movie ads on the first page: there's BILLY JACK (Bel-Kirk, Valley), TORA TORA TORA (Broadway), THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (Guild 45th, Renton), and, up in Edmonds, Capra's HOLE IN THE HEAD + BREAKFAST WITH TIFFANY'S (Edgemont). 1/

Choice of Powers (Tyrone, that is) today: LLOYDS OF LONDON (Winter Garden) or SUEZ (Paramount). And it just might be me, but I can really smell the stable on Wallace Beery and Mickey Rooney in STABLEMATES (5th Ave). 1/

It's Friday here in 2025 and in 1969, so let's do an extended breakdown of the weekend listings! Per usual, we'll take it page-by-page. Starting with Michael Caine AND Noël Coward in THE ITALIAN JOB (Paramount) paired with spaghetti western ACES HIGH. 1/

Let's talk about the big ads on the page—if you want to see Ford's RIO GRANDE (Orpheum) or LAST OF THE BUCCANEERS (Coliseum), you're going to wait till tomorrow; but if you're looking for a western, there's Anthony Mann's DEVIL'S DOORWAY (Garden)… 1/

The big draw today (though not the biggest ad) is John Ford's MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (Music Hall) vying against a re-released LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER (Liberty), 11-years-old at this point, maybe that's why it has the bigger ad…. 1/

It's the 70s, so you have multiple films from—
Redford: JEREMIAH JOHNSON, BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, THE STING
Streisand: FOR PETE'S SAKE, THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
Woody Allen: PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM; EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED…

Young Tom Cruise making a name for himself: RISKY BUSINESS (Harvard Exit) & ALL THE RIGHT MOVES (UA 70). Nuclear holocaust paranoia scarred me, so not bummed about missing TESTAMENT… or DEAL OF THE CENTURY… little bummed about missing NEVER CRY WOLF. 1/
