Fun "hustle" double-bill of Jules Dassin films, NEVER ON SUNDAY + TOPKAPI (Orpheum).

Love that horror triple-bill at El Rancho drive-in: DR. TERRORS HOUSE OF HORRORS + HORROR OF PARTY BEACH + THE CURSE OF THE LIVING CORPSE. 4/4

Christopher Lee stars as the eponymous THE FACE OF FU MANCHU (Aurora, Duwamish drive-ins), a villain I'm not sure could ever be rehabilitated in this day & age. Which is the better race film, THE GREAT RACE (Music Box) or THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES (Paramount). 3/

Probably will pass on John Sturges' THE HALELUJAH TRAIL (Cinerama) in favor of his previous effort THE GREAT ESCAPE (Admiral, Magnolia). William Wyler's creepiest film, THE COLLECTOR (Lake City) is a good Halloween fit. 2/

Of the two cold war thrillers, I prefer the absurdism of DR. STRANGELOVE (Colonial) to the realism of FAIL SAFE (Edgemont). And, of course, Peter Sellers can also be felt in WHAT'S NEW PUSSY CAT (The Town). 1/

I could draw your attention to foreign films COUSIN COUSINE (Guild 45th) and Berman's FACE TO FACE (Movie House), but let's be honest, we're all just going to the "Super Stewardess Show!" BLAZING STEWARDESSES + NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES at the drive-in. 3/3

… and, of course, THE OMEN (UA 150). Choice of Dustin Hoffman vehicles: MARATHON MAN (Coliseum) and LENNY (Northgate), the latter of which is paired with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. 2/

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Uptown) screening somewhere other than the Cinerama! Halloween season films include double-bills of TORSO+TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (Various), BURNT OFFERINGS+PSYCHIC KILLER (Town), GRIZZLY+GREAT SPIDER INVASION (Federal Way Twin)… 1/

Jean-Luc Goddard praised Anthony Mann's MAN OF THE WEST (Orpheum) and it's screening with nifty B-noir HONG KONG CONFIDENTIAL starring Gene Barry & Allison Hayes. 4/4

More sci-fi thrills: WORLD WITHOUT END (Beacon) and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS + THE BLACK SCORPION (Bay). Need to find time to fit both Robert Mitchum bootlegging in THUNDER ROAD (Grand), and Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY (Broadway). 3/

For musical lovers: Minnelli's GIGI (Music Box) and Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC (Blue Mouse). I see what you're doing Uptown: Elvis in KING CREOLE + KING SOLOMON'S MINES. Proto-Gomer Pyle NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS plays the Egyptian—pass. 2/

Yesterday, there was SON OF THE BLOB, today daddy THE BLOB screens at the Coliseum along with I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE. Across the street, the Roosevelt revives A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE paired w/ THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. 1/

Two nice revival double-bills: Chaplin's MODERN TIMES + CITY LIGHTS (Guild 45) and, for the horse loving crowd, THE YEARLING + NATIONAL VELVET (Burien), bring the kids. I'd hit the Aurora Drive-in's horror triple feature—SON OF BLOB, EQUINOX, & ASTRO ZOMBIES—but I need sleep. 2/2

Late with the post today, sorry! Wealth of greatness today: THE GODFATHER, CABARET, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, KLUTE, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, THE HOSPITAL, and THE CANDIDATE. 1/

It's been a long time since I watched a Roy Roger's film, so maybe I should check out SUNSET IN EL DORADO+ARSON SQUAD (Palomar)—could be fun. ANCHORS AWEIGH, fourth big week at the Music Box. While I'm here, might as well get tickets for the Trapp Family Singers—Tyrolean Xmas Concert (Moore). 3/3

SUDAN (Grand) is the only Maria Montez/Jon Hall pairing where their characters don't end up together. Still too early, in my book, by will make exception for CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (Coliseum), probably my favorite Stanwyck film. 2/

Two Cary Grant films today that are fine…they're fine…just not top tier in my book: TOPPER (Colonial) and Hitchcock's SUSPICION (Varsity)—that said, both are enjoyable in their way…. I do like THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (Embassy) despite its cop-out ending. 1/

Question: do I sit through THE THREE STOOGES GO AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE (Paramount) for SIEGE OF THE SAXONS? Regardless, will catch LAWRENCE OF ARABIA in its final two days at the Coliseum. 3/3
doodydan.bsky.social
THE THRILL OF IT ALL + GIDGET GOES TO ROME (Northgate) seems like a wonderfully carefree double-bill. Art house double-bill THE TRIAL + VICTIM notable for playing two venues in town, Ridgemont and Broadway, while Fellini's 8 1/2 (Varsity) screens the U-District. 2/

Burton & Taylor in their first post-CLEOPATRA film, THE V.I.P.S (Blue Mouse), popular enough for a holdover, but will it last 11 weeks like Billy Wilder's IRMA LA DOUCE (Music Box). 1/

Finally, who wants to go to the Valley Drive-in for an ORDINARY PEOPLE + THE ELEPHANT MAN double-feature.

*Might have to return to '81 in a few days to catch peak Siouxsie and the Banshees. 4/4

…very few of which were as sophisticated as promised. Peter Weir's now classic GALLIPOLI plays the Egyptian, but I'm more interested in THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT, though much like its source material, it went through countless cuts and bastardizations before a complete "text" could be restored. 3/
doodydan.bsky.social
…ads emphasizing its campiness would soon follow. I know there's a lot of love for CUTTER'S WAY (Pike Place Cinema), but I've never warmed to it; now BODY HEAT, that's a hot neo-noir. HEAVY METAL (UA 70) part of the late 70s/early 80s movement toward adult-aimed animation… 2/

Burt Reynolds wants YOU to have his baby in PATERNITY—no thanks, daddy. Meanwhile, Faye Dunaway in her most infamous role, MOMMIE DEAREST (Cinerama)—looks to be early enough in the film's release when the studio thought it still had a prestige picture… 1/

You can see Marlene Dietrich in THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN with a girl revue (State) or without (Roycroft). But, of course, my heart belongs to Karloff & Lugosi in THE RAVEN (Roosevelt). 3/3

Don't think I've ever come across SHE MARRIED HER BOSS (Liberty) or THE DARK ANGEL (5th Ave) except maybe in filmographies of the principals. The film of the Joe Louis vs Max Baer fight (Winter Garden) is a must-see. TOP HAT (Blue Mouse) is prime Astaire & Rogers. 2/
