Entomologia Terrae Novae is an unpubl. manuscript by Philip Henry Gosse (1833) on the insect fauna of Newfoundland.
The ms (which has been digitized in the Biodiversity Heritage Library) was returned to Newfoundland a few years back.See the story and the link to the book at s.si.edu/2rjaVvV

Cool news about moss species on Haida Gwaii (islands off the coast of British Columbia, Canada), from the "Gwaii Haanas - Islands of Beauty" facebook site
Our terrestrial team partnered with UBC bryologists to complete a flurry of surveys for rare and endemic mosses in central Gwaii Haanas. The primary focus of the fieldwork was a set of detailed surveys for an endangered species, Dalton’s moss, whose entire Canadian population is found within a single inlet in Gwaii Haanas. We found several new populations of the moss and the information from the survey will be vital in defining its critical habitat in the upcoming federal recovery strategy. In addition, new populations of several critically imperilled, red-listed and endemic species were located. Data will be used in part to support species-at-risk listing processes, taxonomic science, and add weight to the formal designation of Haida Gwaii as a “Key Biodiversity Area” in Canada. British Columbia is a renowned global hotspot for moss diversity, recognized with areas such as Southeast Asia, the Northern Andes, and the African Highlands (among others) as being globally significant. Within BC, Haida Gwaii is a vital and rich part of that provincial diversity, with many rare and unique species making their home in our forests. A well-known example is our lush mats of Takakia, considered by many to be the most ancient land plant on earth. Other examples include species that are found only on Haida Gwaii and in the Himalayas; some that only live on Haida Gwaii and in Northern Europe; some species are only found on Haida Gwaii and in the tropics; Some species are endemic and found nowhere else on earth. Skookumchuk Narrows is an impressive tidal rapids at the north end of Sechelt Inlet, on BC's Sunshine Coast (just north of Vancouver). Impressive whirlpools form on the outgoing tides!

There comes a time in every (aquatic insect) project where one decides whether to throw away the old dirty vials or take a couple of days and clean them out. I can't bear to throw out these beautiful glass vials, so...

There is a huge wild fire S of Port Alberni on Vancouver Isl. (on Canada's SW coast). We live 80km from it (as the crow flies) & can see the smoke plume. Currently, the road into Bamfield (home of Bamfield Marine Institute) is blocked and Bamfield is without power. Thinking about them all.

recently came across another Ericaceae plant that I would have never have expected it to be in that family: Allotropa virgata, the Candystick plant, which gets its nutrition from fungi (no chlorphyll).
(interestingly, Allotropa is also a genus name for a parasitoid wasp!!)

A moment of joy this morning watching the violet green swallows darting about in the sky. When at rest, their colours just pop!

I photographed this blue dasher dragonfly at Smuggler Cove Prov. park in BC (southwestern Canada), and didn't realize I had also captured a little tree frog until I got home and viewed the photo. A nice surprize, #MySmallAct

Interesting sight at the beach today (Southwest British Columbia) - a gull (immature gull of some sort) eating a sea cucumber that had apparently washed up on the beach.
