For a government that was elected on ‘Change’, it’s probably one of the lower cost levers they could pull to argue they had, in fact, changed anything at all.

WHSmiths, Kingston - started Christmas ‘99 through some loophole that allowed me to work age 15. I was in charge of restocking the roll wrap. Lasting memory was a team meeting on 30/12 where we heard what we’d do if the Millennium Bug hit (there was no plan).

Øresund border practicalities are my go to argument when people say Britain could never join Schengen. You can still carry out border checks and be in Schengen, and there’s no reason you couldn’t do same at Dover and St Pancras.
